We should not compare La La Land and The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. I know that this statement coming from me is kind of ironic(considering all those amazing jokes I have made on this platform about how Chazelle ain't got shit on Demy). I am not saying that La La Land wasn't influenced by Demy's cinema. It was, the Umbrellas are Chazelle's favourite movie(he clearly has taste). The similarites are visible. The structure, the story are similar and La La Land's music is clearly influenced by the score of a lot of french nouvelle vague films. The "another day of sun" sequence is a recreation of the opening scene from The Young Girls Of Rochefort. I am not saying that there are no similarities between the two films, all I am saying is that we should stop fighting over what movie is better, and instead start celebrating everything both movies achieved.

We should celebrate the fact that two movies explored doomed romances, but they never stopped being unapologetically romantic. We should celebrate the fact that two movies deconstructed the musical genre and brought a touch of realism into the genre, but they always remained nostalgic and pure, and their love for the genre was always there, hidden in every breathtaking frame. We should celebrate the fact that two movies used every colour in the world in the most beautiful, gorgeous, breathtaking way, that they used their tender, melancholic but so humanly sweet songs, and with these amazing songs and their uplifting almost invisible dancing they perfectly described what love is and how love affects they fools that love. We should celebrate the fact that two movies used every aspect a film can use and they moved to tears thousands of viewers. We should celebrate the fact that two musicals had the ability to make people feel a million different emotions, that two movies found magic even in the most unmagical aspects of life. That two movies captured such an indescribable beauty, and they filled their frames with that beauty and a magic that words are not capable enough to describe. Both of them became visual poems and their soundtrack painted these two poems with all the colours of the rainbow.

My point is that, when aliens will eventually find us, with the intend of exterminating us, the only thing we have to do is to send them two copies of La La Land and The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. The motherfuckers are going to get so profoundly moved, they are going to spare our miserable asses. Because these two movies are cinema at their peak. They are unique breathtakingly beautiful pieces of art filled with emotion, and they contain in them everything that makes art priceless, and everything that makes humanity beautiful. Do you ever get overwhelmed by the simple fact that movies simply exist? Yeah me too, I don't even know why I lowered this to a 4.5/5.
