Observing the one-two punch of puberty and parental rigidity, Domee Shi's "Turning Red" revolves around the universal and specific adventure that is adolescence. Bouncily animated characters and turn-of-the-millennium color schemes tell the appealing story of Mei, a 13-year-old whose emotions and cultural-familial heritage have her transforming into a giant red panda only to be soothed by her group of friends. The narrative is rich with theme and representation, and PIXAR's brand of zip and fully-formed designs are on delightful display. The results are solidly enjoyable.
