the first time i ever saw la la land was on a flight to bolivia in june of 2017. i had remembered seeing the poster in a theater a few months before, and decided i needed to watch it while i had the time. that viewing changed my life. the score. the dancing. the acting. damien chazelle had entered my brain and rewritten its chemistry. within the next five days i owned my own copy on dvd, and in a month i had purchased it on digital. i think i was thirteen years old, so it really was one of my first purchases i made myself. when school started back up again, it was all i could talk to anyone about because i just thought the movie was an absolute masterpiece, perfection from beginning to end. as the years have gone by, youd think id say i talk about it less, but i dont. before starting a letterboxd account, i think i had watched the movie around 20 times. the ending to this movie is perfect, and people love to hate on the fact that they dont end up together. they COULDNT end up together you idiots, they had to be apart. mia and sebastian are beautiful characters, and they have haunted me for seven years of my life. every. single. viewing. feel like it was the first time i was watching la la land, and i recommend it to every person i know. i dont rewatch it often enough because i feel that i have to give it my full attention in order to appreciate it enough. this past summer i watched it again with a friend who had never seen it, and when the words “The End” struck the screen, i literally looked like a dazed child seeing a unicorn. eyes glazed over, smile on my face, and on the verge of tears. la la land i will always love you.
