    Perfect New Years Eve TV rewatch while playing a hazy game of Scrabble. Captions on, we learned Durand-Durand really IS spelt with a ‘d’ on the end!

    Uber driver becomes emergency house-call doctor for a night and we accompany him into various high and low Parisienne dwellings, which was enough to hold our interest. We also liked the radio dispatcher, who is never seen. The classic French farce structure was old hat though, and I didn’t agree with the music choices at all.

    Undemanding and family friendly, so I get why it wasn’t titled One Night in Paris (although it should have been).

    5 stars for James Baldwin’s eloquence and righteous anger and the barely concealed sensitivity of an artist, like Simone or Van Gogh.
    1 star for the clueless interviewer who does a squirm inducing job. 
    Maybe it has taken all this time for white people to fully comprehend what Baldwin was saying in 1971.

    At 77 minutes, I Fidanzati is efficiently told and eminently watchable. Essentially neo-realist in style, but successfully throws some touches of early 60s arthouse ambiguity and dislocation into the mix. Olmi makes this contrast seem to work effortlessly. It’s just so pleasurable to watch when the elements of filmmaking - here particularly sound, cinematography, editing, direction - click together to create a distinctive feeling of time and place: both physical and cinematic.
