Kirsten Dunst (pretending to be "wild and loose" as an undercover operative who doesn't want boys on the girl's school campus, seducing and drugging the grandchild of a large donor with coca cola and cramps pain reliever): "I have a reputation for being wild and loose."
Boy: "Can I have another Midol?"
Why is this not 90s teen movie canon? Oh, that's right, because it focuses on girls trying to keep their girl friendships in tact without boy interference, not boys trying to get laid. Well, this has zany zingers, makes the takedown of the patriarchy look fun/necessary (boys aren’t shown as inherent monsters, just as unwitting participants in scenarios that favor them in school, sex, making mistakes, which, if unchecked, then can make them monsters as men who inherited the world outright; Sarah Kernochan gives 'em a choice, though). But just so the boys don’t get a completely bad rap, baby Kartheiser is the perfect rascal, leading a gang of rockabilly boys who call themselves the Flat Critters after roadkill and whom the local police address as "stud" lol. Kirsten Dunst is and always will be my fave that I grew up alongside with. NO MORE WHITE GLOVES! There’s a lot about the filmmaking that’s blasé but the femme teen spirit and the script is a nice subversion if the 50s sudsy sock-hop movie by giving the girls brains, brawn, and girlfriends for life!!!
I’m bummed I missed this when I was a teen simply because it was sent straight-to-home-video while everyone went to theaters to see boys hump pies. And that itself reinforces every thesis in this movie.
