Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

We all have powers of one kind or another but in our own way, we are all Spider-Man and we’re all counting on you.

Forget the 2D + 3D animation vibrant combo which makes it look surreal, all the brilliant voice acting (Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Chris Pine, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Nicholas Cage, John Mulaney, Kathryn Hahn, Liev Schreiber, Kimiko Glenn, Zoë Kravitz) the soundtrack, the sound design, the dialogue, the humour, all the super creative comic book usages with the page introductions, page turnings and speech bubbles. A comic book brought to life seems to be the answer to creating a perfect superhero movie, both metaphorically and literally.

It's a leap of faith. That's all it is, Miles. A leap of faith.

Every scene is special, from begin to end. So much visual storytelling, heart and life with every frame. An origin story where an older depressed Spider-Man teaches a new younger Spider-Man, it’s all great, this Mr Miyagi & Karate Kid dynamic. Love that Mile’s life echoes Peters with both their uncles dying, and that Aunt May & Peter have both lost each other but are reunited for this film. I really like all the character designs on the webheads and villains, it does the sinister six which is cool; Mile’s spider logo is perfect for this version of the character. It makes me really happy to see the PS4 suit in the Spider cave.  I really like that a Spider-Man is killed off and in his last moments he tells Miles to wear a mask. Just like the Raimi trilogy which this film respects so much, Into the Spider-Verse gets Spider-Man and perfectly captures Stan Lee’s message; Anyone can wear the mask.

Anyone can wear the mask. You can wear the mask. If you didn't know that before, I hope you do now.

Fun fact: This film contains several superhero actors; Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage, Blade) Nicholas Cage (Ghost Rider) Liev Schreiber (X-Men origins Wolverine) Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision) Marvin Jones III (Black Lighting) Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) Cliff Robertson (Spider-Man)
