Every single person working on this film understood the assignment, whether they knew it at the time they were working on it or not (here's looking at you, behind the scenes animosity between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy).
This was undoubtedly the lightning bolt into blockbuster action cinema that 2015 was practically screaming for and the call was heard loudly and clearly by George Miller and his cast and crew.
I've seen this film so many times already but it still gets me on an emotional and entertainment level like the first time—if not even more. There are so many visual details to discover on repeat viewings or just small moments in the action and human moments alike that I'm just overcome with a profound sense of awe and wonder with every repeat viewing.
While every Mad Max film before this felt like its own great thing, this fourth installment is so compelling that it serves not only as the highlight reel of everything that came before, nay, it all but eclipses its origins and delivers something as genre-defining and groundbreaking as Mad Max 2 had been for decades before it.
For generations this will be the film that people think about when they think Mad Max and George Miller is crazily going to attempt another go at the well via the prequel route soon, before apparently still planning to deliver a sequel to this—God bless him.
I love these characters, I love their bond forged through grinding teeth, necessity and earned respect despite mistrust and I love the music, that sweet, sweet music. Tom Holkenborg brings this epic tale to sonic life as if he were spitting gasoline into an engine to get it into overdrive when the action drums and guitar hits, but he also gently caresses the strings when hope seems lost and even someone as steadfast as Furiosa falls to her knees. Oh, what a score, what a lovely score!
I can't wait to meet the Imperator all over again soon.
