Seriously? They could’ve called it Beetledeuce. Or BeetleTWOce.
Easily, this is the most insane film I’ve seen in 2024. It’s pure cinematic anarchy. It is absolutely bursting at the seams with imagination and visual splendor. And it is also absolutely lawless, refusing to bow to any sort of structure or conventions in its presentation.
This will not work for everyone. I can see a lot of people hating how unhinged everything is, writing it off as “dumb.” And yeah, at times it is very dumb. On purpose.
They stuffed so many fascinating ideas into this story—so many subplots. And one by one, all of those subplots conclude in the most abrupt, silly, and unsatisfying way possible. At first it annoyed me, but it kept happening until I realised that that was the joke. And then I was on board. I gleefully accepted it as a ludicrous subversion of what I expect from a film generally.
There is an art to ridiculousness, and I think they got it mostly right here. A lot of cringe-inducing humor didn’t work for me in the first act. But once the plot really gets rolling, this is absolutely a breakneck-paced ride of insanity that effortlessly entertains (for those who can embrace the absurdism) with just enough maternal heart to hold it all together.
We’ve gotten another sequel this year that outdoes the original. And it would’ve been even better with more Danny Devito and Willem Dafoe.
