i feel like i’m the minority here, because i didn’t necessarily hate it. it was definitely a squirm-in-your-seat kind of film, and while i enjoyed director carter smith’s stomach churning adaption of the ruins, i feel like this film never finds its footing. it had a good idea, but it never really RUNS with it. is it body horror? is it a thriller? the performances are good, but the plot sort of flatlines in the middle. the premise is there, but it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. i would’ve loved to have seen some cool body horror moments that are pivotal for the subgenre this film claims to be a part of, however, nothing is really shown that grossed me out. i wanted to be grossed out. that’s why i enjoy body horror films. i wish the “bugs” had a bigger part, and i was hoping to see more of their effects on their hosts. this was okay, but the ruins remains the superior carter smith film.
PS: make👏🏼more👏🏼movies👏🏼where👏🏼a gay person👏🏼and a straight person👏🏼are best friends because i’m gay and my best friend is straight and i just loved seeing that unique dynamic portrayed on screen.
