La La Land is a triumph in so many ways. It’s about as good as Gosling has ever been and I see this as the moment that Emma Stone was announced as an A+ list actress. She had Easy A, The Help, and The Amazing Spider-Man, but had yet to really be taken seriously as an actress until Birdman. This was that announcement for her. Stone does such an excellent job capturing hope initially and resignation eventually as she navigates trying to live out her “Hollywood Dream.” Ryan Gosling is also fabulous and his stoic and sad realism often serve as a necessary catalyst to the central plot line.
There are some interesting themes that work through this film about following your dreams and the price of success. There is also a somewhat contrived (but I still like it anyway) ending sequence in which we get to explore the “in another life” or when our pathways cross at the wrong time. Rewatching this after having recently watched Past Lives really brought that theme to the forefront and it’s one that does not get much attention in film, despite being such a real part of our human existence. The notion that success and healthy relationships are mutually exclusive is a bit of a lame take away message, but I think the larger point still works and is effective. Anyway, we get to a well done final scene that is both sad and enchanting. It’s hard to complain too much.
Overall, this is a meticulously made, beautifully shot film, with a delightful score. It’s probably the best original musical put to film that we’ve seen this century.
