AngierCorleone’s review published on Letterboxd:
I could sit here and talk about how great this movie is, I mean I do love the original Inside Out. But there’s something else Pixar related that’s been nagging at my head, and I wanna talk about it.
In a recent article discussing the future of the studio, Pete Doctor (the current Chief Creative Officer) said that they’re going to mentor their new up and coming directors to make less autographical and personal tales. Instead they will and I quote “develop concepts with clear mass appeal, many of which in the case of sequels and spin-offs have already been proven.”
Out of every piece of movie related news I have ever heard, I don’t think my heart has ever sunken as low as it did.
I can’t even begin to understand what they’re talking about, like what are they even saying?! What do sequels and spinoffs have to do with creating mass appeal? This does not feel like the words from an animation studio capable of making beautiful pieces of art, and more the statement of a corporation desperate to appease the big bosses and shareholders. Literally no one is asking them to churn out sequels and spinoffs for the rest of time, they and I would much rather prefer they make original content. Not to mention that the most hated Pixar movie of the last 9 years was a FUCKING SPIN OFF! I know they are struggling financially right now, but this is not the way to go!
I had hoped that Pixar would bring itself back from the hole that’s been dug for it, because despite troubling times there were still some gems and people do appreciate what they make. But now? With these words uttered it’s the final death knell in the coffin of Pixar. We are never gonna get the quality we once had, and it was stupid of me to assume otherwise. But do you know what stings the most? These words, these cold and corporate words are uttered by Pete Doctor. The mastermind behind Monsters Inc, Soul, AND THIS!!! How can he say such things, about the studio he helped create from the ground up?! I don’t know, but it’s painful to see him and Pixar fall off so bad.
So while I’m apprehensive about what the Sequel to this is gonna be like, it may be the last time we see creative freedom from Pixar. And knowing that actually breaks my heart to the deepest extent.
But what do you lot think? :(
