Watched this one in glorious 4K, all the better to catch some of the funnier visual gags (“Bagel!”, of course; some of the word balloons) and to really marvel at how deep and intricately detailed the animation really is. Of course, I could be watching this on a janky handheld camcorder bootleg like it’s 1997 and it wouldn’t make the movie any less hilarious and fun and big-hearted or dampen scenes like when we find out her friends call her Liv or the assembling of the Spider-People or that unbelievable climactic fight sequence. Spider-Man, at his core, has always been about family and about how hard it is to be a superhero while also being Just A Guy, and this is maybe the movie that most gets that, even more than Raimi’s trilogy (no point in comparing it to the MCU, where Spider-Man is A Teen With Tony Stark’s Shit), with a real emotional underpinning that gives added weight to all the super cool shit on screen. It’s still a masterpiece, of course, and I’m still waiting for American animation to even try to catch up. Shout out to the mighty Rubik’s Cube.
