celia’s review published on Letterboxd:
what’s up guys, it’s your friendly neighborhood gamer girl here to compare two mediums that probably shouldn’t be compared this closely.
when Sony released Spider-Man for PS4 this past september, all anybody could ask themselves was: ok, yeah, there are fun bad guys and the graphics are pretty, but does the swinging feel good? when Spider-Man 2 came out in 2004 (!!) it was lauded for a realistic swinging, where you really felt like you were flying through a city (literally, it was so good it sometimes felt like a rhythm game). in this newest (final?) Spider-Man origin film, when Miles drops off the building, you feel a wave of fear and anticipation, before it finally breaks and relief washes over you. THAT’S a video game moment, accurately portrayed in a film, for maybe the first time ever.
when Bioshock Infinite was released in 2013, it was also lauded for its breakthrough storytelling, although that may not hold up all these years later. looking back, it’s easy to see how Irrational Games’ handling of the alternate universes was both pedantic and incredibly obtuse all at the same time. yet this movie handles what Ken Levine couldn’t, in a shorter time period to boot.
i’ve never seen anything that looks like this film, and i’m kind of surprised it even exists. from the animation style, to the music, to the incredibly talented cast, and even the scope of plot lines they manage to adequately explain without getting condescending. there were some weirdnesses i didn’t love (anyone see it in 2D but it looked like the 3D version around the edges or did my theater just royally screw me over?), but the whole package was so daring that i respect the hell out of it. sign me up for the rest of this series, they have earned my trust
if you made it to the end of this backdoor pilot of my video game blog, thanks. and let me know in the comments down below which building YOU would jump off of in New York City and somehow not die on the way down
