Luis Buñuel is amongst my favourite filmmakers, having seen and loved many of his works. Though surprisingly enough I never got around to watching possibly his most famous and well known work, Un Chien Andalou, that changed today…
Can I really review this film?
Incredible and bizarre images. A film where every cut is intended to associate two images together very powerfully, it seems Buñuel and Dali studied the work of Eisenstein rather closely.
I’ve read a number of interpretations. One examines the film from a Freudian perspective and is rather interesting, others examine it just from their own perspective. But I feel no interpretation can truly crack this work, and that was clearly the intention.
Buñuel and Dali explore ideas of religion and its constraints in relation to one’s desires, the bizarre and maturing nature of sexual desire, romantic relationships, and of course eye slicing…
A great double viewing with L’Age D’or
