The Marvels

"you can stand tall without standing alone."

i used to be one of the biggest fans of the mcu you could've ever met: i've talked about this in some of my past reviews but the comic book movie genre (specifically the mcu) were my first introduction into the world of filmmaking in general so as much as i bash on these movies nowadays: there is still a part inside of me wanting to continue loving these movies like i did when i was younger seeing them on opening night with a big tub of popcorn in my hand grinning ear to ear: but those days seem to be a faint recollection of memories more than anything else at this point.
i'll give it credit that it at least isn't the worst mcu movie we've gotten this year? but there are some genuine positives hidden beneath this cesspool of mediocrity: kamala khan has been one of the few new additions to this universe that i actually enjoy and iman vellani just crushes it in this role: every scene with her is an absolute joy. the chemistry between the three leads is apparent but the problem is that their relationship is nothing more than a hollow shell with no emotional depth behind it causing the bits that are supposed to resonate with the audience end up falling so flat.
however: that is nothing compared to easily the biggest problem of the movie which is the pacing. what atrocities did nia dacosta commit for the editing department to butcher her project like this? there are glimpses of a fun low-stakes body swap story that could be entertaining but everything is so sporadic and frantic to a point that it ended up feeling weirdly overstimulating: there is so much trying to be developed but in the end it feels like nothing truly is: it is just a mismatch of throwing things at the wall and seeing if they'll stick and that is most evident with that post credit scene: i'm not going to spoil it but it is such an amateurish bidding process to make this universe a worthwhile experience.
i can still go on and on about all my gripes in this: dar-benn is one of the mcu's worst antagonists (i finished this a few minutes ago and i already had to look up her name) with ridiculous motives, the vfx is super spotty and hardly anything feels tangible: there is even more but i am going to stop before this turns into more of a rant than a review. i wish i cared about the mcu! i really do but i just can't anymore and it seems many agree: i wish the mcu decided to crumble on a different occasion because representation such as this is so important but i can't defend the movie itself: there is so much potential in here but this is ridiculously bad.
