So as I feared, it was gonna be a bit of a letdown to continue this series without Andy Serkis and his magnificent performance of Caesar, but that being said, I still really liked this. Seeing the continued evolution of the apes and how different groups take different paths to building strong societies was very interesting and I like that we’re now in what seems to be that sweet spot between the fantastic reboot trilogy of the past 10-15 years and the classic timeline from the 60s & 70s. I’m still totally all in on this series, despite this one not hitting the highs of the first three. I think that truly speaks to the quality of them in general, but if the future installments can maintain this level of quality (and pepper in some amazing characters like Raca along the way), then these will be a treat to watch. Let’s not forget there’s one or two duds in the original film series, so the new ones are doing just fine.
I’m also willing to bet I’ll like it more on the rewatch. That’s been a pretty consistent trend with these films.
