I sincerely hope this leads more people to watch In The Heights, Jon M Chu’s previous, lower-budgeted-but-just-as-ambitious-and-maybe-even-better film. Seriously, check it out!
It’s hard for a part 1 to be truly all-time great, but Wicked really does try its best. Chu is determined to transport us back to Hollywood’s musicals of old, where the focus was on the talent of the performers, the extravagant sets and production, and just on having FUN. It’s hard to not get totally immersed in it, I know I did. Having actors like Erivo and Grande (a total revelation btw) surely helps. The long runtime just flies by.
Most of the flaws, like I said above, are virtue of it being a part 1. It’s hard to come out of it fully satisfied, but when Defying Gravity ends, all the complaints went out the window fast. My goodness, what an ending! Bring on part 2
