Poke is nothing new around Los Angeles these days, as evidenced by the continued onslaught of the mostly Hawaiian-based import over the past couple of years. And so more recently there’s been a need to innovate within the genre, which is exactly what Palms newcomer TikiFish hopes to do.

The strip mall find sits just steps away from chef Perry Cheung’s Phorage on Overland Avenue, and has his backing. More prominently will be chefs Wonny Lee (Hamasaku) and Ulises Pineda-Alfaro (Plan Check), who will be the driving force behind the concept and the execution. Because of the duo’s backgrounds in fresh Japanese cuisine and Latin seafood, respectively, expect both poke and ceviche to be present on the TikiFish menu.

As for the food, look for an expanded set of options beyond the usual tuna and salmon found at most poke shops around the city. Here customers will be able to DIY their own bowls from a variety of rotating fish and sauces, with options for uni, crab salad, and more as well. That's much the same for the ceviches as well, though expect more pre-prepared options on that front.

TikiFish opens today on Overland, with daytime hours starting at 11 a.m. and running until 5:30 p.m. on weekends, and 9 p.m. on weeknights.
