Henry’s Preschool Quilt

It’s been a long time, but I want to try and get back into posting and sewing.

Back in May I finished this small quilt to gift to my youngest’s preschool upon his graduation.  It is very colorful. Colors can be fun.

I ran out of purple embroidery thread. Things got creative. Choices.

GIVEAWAY: The Applique Book by Casey York

Hello all!

I’m honored to be a stop on The Appliqué Book by Casey York blog tour.

caseyyork_theappliquebook_cover

And I’m a contributor in the book, how cool is that?

11131, York, SP16

I love how the photographed my project, Falling Leaves.  This quilt utilizes a sew-and-turn applique technique.  The book also has lots of projects featuring bias tape, raw edge, needle-turn, and so many more ways to applique!

I thought I’d show a little preview of a project I’m working on that uses the same technique I used for Falling Leaves.

Make Do and Mend

IMG_2954It’s 22 degrees in the Ann Arbor area today.  My coat had a broken zipper and I was debating whether to attempt a fix or just buy a new jacket.  But it is warm and fits well, and it turns out JoAnn Fabrics had heavy duty zippers in 26″ lengths.

I had to pop-off the male snaps in order to fix the zipper.  I put buttons to cover the holes.  A bit of nonsensical aesthetics.

seedumA friend says the local cleaners would charge about $65 for a similar zipper replacement.

$6 zipper + 1.5 hours of my time (always an existential dilemma placing a worth on my time…) = maybe $24?  I am very happy to know how to manage these tasks.

Spring cleaning

Spruced up the blog a bit!  Changed the header, changed the “About Me,”  added this fun little nerd so you can troll me on Instagram:

Instagram

and I added a new page tab up top.  Modern Art Lessons has replaced the Costume Party, which I will make live again at the end of the summer.  The Modern Art page has the introduction and a list with links for all the posts on the topic.

Hope everyone approves!

Lessons in Modern Art for Modern Quilters – Introduction

What do we mean when we say we are “Modern” quilters?   Do we mean simply we are quilters who are making art that speaks to the “now”?  That we’re of-the-moment, or trendy?  Or are we identifying ourselves with the world of Modern Art?  What is “Modern Art?”

artbutton2

In my series “Lessons in Modern Art for Modern Quilters” I want to look at the history of this historical artistic movement, and relate the paintings (and sculptures) created during this time to our quilting community’s aesthetic.

I am not an art historian, and I am not an academic.  However, I felt a need to better understand Modern Art and am using this blog as a place where I can store my notes and analyze how “Modern Quilting” relates to Modernism as a whole.

My planned outline (subject to change) is to cover Impressionism (1870s) through Hard-Edge Painting (1960s) and the relevant styles that lie between.   I hope you enjoy this series as I have had immense pleasure looking to the past and being inspired by our Modernist predecessors!

I have a couple of sewing resolutions for 2013… One of the biggest being I want to make myself some outfits.  I’m 6 feet tall with a LONG waist, so it’s difficult finding clothes that fit.

I saw this pattern on a model in JoAnn’s:
