It just occurred to me that a thoughtful bunch like you may have advice on a question I have...

How do you teach somebody attention to detail and what a minimum standard of work is?

    Could you provide more context?

On a general level, if you want attention to detail, you need the person to feel that the detail matters. When teaching English, one thing I ask students to do is correct erroneous sentences where the list of sentences are all ones they've written.

As for a minimum standard of work, that phrase itself is only defined if below-threshold work is treated as unusable or unacceptable. For example, when my students are lazy and do their homework in a sloppy fashion, I write"Zero" on top and hand it back along with a fresh copy of the same homework.

Some of you (probably none, maybe one) might have noticed that I have been absent from identi.ca... I'd like to have a story completely explaining it away but I don't.

Frankly my lifestyle has changed a lot - I spend a lot more time in meatspace (people, drinking, tomfoolery, girls, rock climbing/bouldering, uni work) and Pump.io based Identi.ca doesn't offer the same level of interaction and value that the Statusnet version did.

It's not to say that I won't be dropping around occasionally.

Fedup failed... Though I still have a reasonable system so I'll download the CD and install afresh tomorrow.
In the italian mailing list they suggested to enable updates-testing repo and upgrade fedup from 0.7 to 0.8. It worked, and i finally upgrade from F19 to F20. But my system sometimes decide to block after the grub...

Yeah I already did that, and I used the no-gpg-check (or whatever it was) option.

Not having a particularly good Festivus. I think I am just going to read The Elements of Fucking Style and pace the house aimlessly until it is late enough to eat and go to bed.

I think I am going to take my Friendica instance down. I don't really get much compelling use out of it, and having this massive hunk of not-very-active PHP makes me nervous for security reasons.
Oh… Do you have a Diaspora* account then?

Australia has an entire conference dedicated to a kernel?

    Jason Self at 2013-12-05T23:35:49Z

No time and no fund ):

    Olivier Mehani at 2013-12-06T00:28:39Z

It's not all kernel stuff. It's basically an "open source" conference.

Ugh, I think the problem that has held up the implementation I am working on for a few days was due to my own arrogance... I enabled some functionality which I didn't really understand and actually interfered and broke things. Good thing I went off the clock to solve this one :)

And again, the key to finding a solution was simply writing a message asking for help - and then realising the solution before I had even sent it.

Though, in my defence - the debug output from the components I am using was fucking useless.

I ended up writing my first bit of PHP in many years to get the information that I really needed. It was really obvious stuff that should have been in the debug output! I may push a patch upstream.

Rubber ducking ftw. We have started doing regular code reviews in the office, and as a result I have started shaping things up in anticipation of having to explain my code to someone. “He is going to ask why I am doing doing this thing here. Why am I doing this thing here? I think I have to because foo, but I'm not sure. Hey, that's not too difficult to find out, I'll try it out now.”

This makes me fucking sick. I can imagine how they gathered such data too and that also makes me even sicker.

Thinking of starting a new blog very soon. It will be Nikola powered, of course...

The idea is that it will be about issues for younger (teens/twenty-something) geeks and hackers. There is already http://bluehackers.org/ but I want to provide a perspective and limited discussion on growing up and integrating with other people our age and not so much about dealing with mental illnesses.

I thought about this a lot last night and there is a *lot* of content to cover. Everything from my own lessons learned, discussion on the problems technology (and privacy) aware geeks face, general PSA's...

I can't help wondering how valid or appropriate some of my personal commentary would be. I doubt I have any controversial opinions, but I do worry about saying something wrong or something that I may regret saying publicly.
I would expect that anyone who thinks for himself/herself will have some controversial opinions. That in itself is not a reason not to start your blog.

    I would be concerned about
    • having enough time to devote to writing blog articles and responding to comments so that site visitors have a reason to return regularly
    • whether you are able to tolerate commenters whose worldviews are quite different from yours
    • where to draw the line on your own content and on comments
    • preventing spam comments (spam chases away legitimate visitors)
    • whether to have occasional articles by guest-writers
You may (or may not) want to think about how something you write could affect your employment after graduation.

If you have the time to put into it, I hope you go for it.

    [email protected] at 2013-11-17T04:32:21Z

Controversial is not bad. By definition.

Wrong sucks a little. But that's why we write publicly, in part, I think. For corrections and refinements. What would really suck is never figuring out where you were wrong.

    Douglas Perkins at 2013-11-17T06:08:00Z

Yeah that's exactly what I am thinking (execpt for the Spam, that's actually pretty easy to deal with). I might just sit on the idea for a bit longer and if it keeps buzzing around my head for long enough I'll just do it.

Guest writers would be really awesome.

I might just draft some articles and if it looks like the idea is robust then I'll bring it public.

Compressing my site's static files with Zopfli (zlib client compatible, but better compression). It's really bloody slow on full compression.

I really must be a terrible tactician.
I come up with a plan, I execute it, it was inneffective, I reflect, I can't see what I did wrong...

    Bummer. :-(

A different and better question is where things deviated from your expectations. (You can be right and still not succeed, after all.)

Either I am ballsy, or stupid... But I feel ready to go start a new project involving Twisted. I am envisioning successfully punching Twisted in the face, but I fear that I may be the one who gets the bloody nose.

I am also looking at using Pulsar with Twisted. I can use the protocol support from Twisted until it suits me to remove twisted in favour of native Pulsar implementations... But, of course, at the moment I am talking shit because no code has been written.

If you're talking about the Python library, I say do it! I got to play with EventMachine in the Ruby world and I'm pretty sure it was modeled after Twisted. Twisted always looked like a great project to me.

Except as otherwise stated in this Policy, the University owns all IP created by Staff:
    (a) created in or during the course of employment with the University; or

Woah, hang on a fucking second!

Considering the other work I will be doing at the same time (on my own time) I can't afford to let this slip by. I guess I have to get an official clarification or amendment made.

I have been getting lots of fake WhatsApp emails that have fake headers. To a normal person they would look very legit, and they would have fooled me except for the fact that I refuse to use a service such as WhatsApp, even to listen to a recorded message sent to my email address.
