Burger-Chan Permanently Calls It Quits at Greenway Plaza

After months of struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic, Greenway Plaza burger favorite Burger-Chan has permanently closed its doors.

The restaurant announced its departure in an Instagram post on Friday, noting that the “strain caused by the pandemic has proved too great an obstacle to overcome.” As previously reported by Eater, Burger-Chan was in serious trouble at Greenway Plaza, which formerly supplied a massive lunch crowd for the food court eatery. As those buildings emptied out for the COVID-19 pandemic, Burger-Chan saw its revenue fall off a cliff as the number of patrons visiting the food court every day dwindled from “thousands” to less than a hundred.

Fortunately, Burger-Chan has a comeback in the works. Owners Diane and Willet Feng are still working on a full-service location of the restaurant at 5353 West Alabama, inside the forthcoming 53West development. It’s unclear when exactly that outpost will open, but it’s still nice to have a little bit of hope during these truly troubling times.

“This is not the end. But we do need to reset and transition to a different model in order to survive,” the restaurant’s Instagram post reads. “Continue supporting all the amazing small businesses in town! Your continued support could be the difference between them staying open or closing.”
