Sirona Ryan was a witch and the proprietress of the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade in the late 19th century.[7] She was quick witted and well-liked and valued good company, gossip and Butterbeer. She was protective of her patrons and stood up to attempts by Victor Rookwood to extort Hogsmeade businesses for "protection" money.[10]
Ryan was a transgender woman.[11]
Biography
She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where she was Sorted into Ravenclaw house. Sirona played Quidditch while at Hogwarts and was the Ravenclaw Quidditch team's Seeker for three years.[9] During her seventh year, she met the first-year Mirabel Garlick, forming a life long friendship.[7][12] She later became the proprietress of the Three Broomsticks, where in the 1890–1891 school year she met the new fifth-year after helping them defend the village from a troll attack.[4]
Personality and traits
Sirona was a brave, kind transgender woman who was willing to stand up for a complete stranger against the likes of Victor Rookwood. She was shown to be a fan of Quidditch, having played the sport in her youth and enjoying cheering for her old House's team, before Headmaster Black cancelled the sport that year.[9]
Magical abilities and skills
- Flying: As a student, Sirona played Quidditch for Ravenclaw, implying some level of skill on a broomstick. She played the Seeker position for three years, a position typically reserved for the lightest, speediest players.[9]
Etymology
"Sirona" is a Celtic goddess of healing, associated with healing springs.[13]
Behind the scenes
- Sirona is voiced by English actress Rebecca Root, a transgender woman, in Hogwarts Legacy,[14] and is the first transgender character introduced in the Wizarding World franchise.[11]
