Pieter Talli was a wizard who attended Durmstrang Institute during the 1980s. One of Durmstrang's top athletes, he embodied the ethos and philosophy of Durmstrang during Headmaster Igor Karkaroff's tenure, being highly competitive and skilled in martial magic yet also very respectful of those he considered his superiors.[2]
Biography[]
Pieter started attending Durmstrang at some point in the 1980s. Either before or during the 1986–1987 school year, he was in correspondence with Merula Snyde, who was sending letters to all the other wizarding schools boasting of her and Hogwarts's prowess. Pieter, a highly competitive student, asked to meet Merula in person. Merula panicked, and not wanting to lose face, agreed to meet, but described Jacob's sibling instead of herself as the person sending the letters. Pieter snuck away from Durmstrang and arrived at Hogwarts. He found Jacob's sibling, who was very confused and brought Pieter to Albus Dumbledore after initially trying to find Merula. Dumbledore asked if Jacob's sibling could show Pieter around Hogwarts and told Jacob's sibling to keep an eye on Pieter after reflecting on his own experiences with Durmstrang students.[2]
Jacob's sibling began to show Pieter around Hogwarts, playing Gobstones with him to get to know him first. Pieter in turn taught Jacob's sibling the Durmstrang processional, a traditional Durmstrang display performed at the start of every Triwizard Tournament. When Pieter asked to practise duelling with Jacob's sibling, they agreed and went to the Duelling Club room, where they happened to run into Merula. Pieter, enraged at Merula for tricking him and insulting Jacob's sibling, duelled her with Jacob's sibling acting as referee. Pieter won, and Merula left sulking. Afterwards, Jacob's sibling showed Pieter to the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch, where Pieter showed off his flying skills.[2]
When Jacob's sibling next suggested going to a classroom, Pieter declined, as he wasn't interested in academic subjects due to how dull they were at Durmstrang. Jacob's sibling didn't believe him, so Pieter decided to teach Jacob's sibling and Penny Haywood about the Dark Arts in the Durmstrang style. Both Jacob's sibling and Penny were surprised at how dull and strict it was, and showed Pieter around the Hogwarts classrooms to give him an idea of how fun learning could be. However, when Penny mentioned her father was a Muggle, Pieter suddenly went quiet. Later, Jacob's sibling questioned him and Pieter revealed that he had never met a Muggle-born wizard before due to Durmstrang's admittance policies and negative stereotypes surrounding Muggle-borns. Jacob's sibling introduced him to Ben Copper, and showed him that Durmstrang's views on Muggle-borns were false. As thanks, Pieter taught the Durmstrang processional to the students Barnaby Lee, Merula, Ben, and Penny. As they were finishing learning the dance, Dumbledore arrived to tell everyone that Pieter had snuck away from Durmstrang and needed to return. Pieter agreed and thanked Jacob's sibling for showing him that there was more to school than athletics, promising to send him a Durmstrang jumper as thanks.[2]
