Keeper was a position in the wizarding sport of Quidditch. There was one Keeper per team, and it was their job to guard the three goalposts attempting to stop the other team's Chasers from scoring.^[1]^[2]^[3] The Keeper also wore the most protection than any other position, which included a helmet, shoulder/chest pads and knee pads. This effectively made them heavier than most of their other team-mates.

History[]

The position of the Keeper had existed since at least the 13th century, although the role had changed somewhat over time. The Keeper was essentially a Chaser, with the added responsibilities of guarding the posts. However, with the addition of the scoring zone in 1620, Keepers generally kept inside this area in order to prevent the opposition from scoring. Keepers were only allowed out of this area to head off incoming Chasers.^[3]

Keepers were exempt from being targeted by Beaters unless the Quaffle was within the scoring area.^[4]

Traits[]

Keepers were typically well-built and athletic players who usually stuck close to the goal posts where they could deploy their defensive skills to their fullest capacity.^[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Jacob's sibling played Keeper for their House, during the 1987–1988 school year, taking over from the previous keeper after he graduated. Their House is chosen by the player.^[16]
An unidentified Gryffindor Keeper during the 1985–1986 school year was known for misplacing the Broom Wax.^[18]
Vicky Frobisher and Geoffrey Hooper tried out for the role of Keeper for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Both were unsuccessful.^[19]
