The High Table was a long table located in the Great Hall of Hogwarts Castle, situated at the farthest point from the entrance.[1]
History[]
This table was where the staff of Hogwarts sat during mealtimes and other occasions where the Hall was in use, with the students being seated at four similar tables in the Hall, one per house. At the centre of the table was a large golden chair reserved for the Headmaster. Aside from the Headmaster, other staff members had their usual places: Rubeus Hagrid traditionally sat at one end of the table, closest to the Gryffindor table, and Minerva McGonagall, perhaps due to her post as Deputy Headmistress at the time, often sat near Albus Dumbledore.[1]
During the Christmas feast in 1993, this table, along with the student tables, was dispensed with for the festivities, as so few were in attendance, most having gone home for the Christmas holidays. Instead, a single table set for twelve was placed in the middle of the Great Hall.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Whether by coincidence or design, Richard Harris (who played Albus Dumbledore for the film adaptations of the Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets) sat in the Headmaster's chair most. Michael Gambon, who would take over the role after Harris's death, only sat at in the Headmaster's chair at the beginning and end of Goblet of Fire. Many fans have seen this as a tribute to Harris.
