"Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting."

The Great Hall floating candles[3] were sticks of wax floating and covering the entire ceiling of the Great Hall to give the Hogwarts students light while they were eating during a feast, breakfast, lunch or dinner.[1]

History[]

The candles served as light while the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were eating food.[1] They also serve as a protection from rain or snow.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The candles used for the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were originally real candles suspended from tungsten wires that would be edited out in post-production. However, during the first days of filming, the candles burned through their wires and fell onto the tables. For the safety of the actors, the filmmakers switched to a digital effect instead.[3]
  • In the first two films, the candles are all the same size, however in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and subsequent films, there are candles of various shapes and sizes.
