"It’s bewitched to look like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts: A History."
— Hermione Granger regarding the Enchanted Ceiling in the Great Hall[src]

An Enchanted Ceiling was a ceiling that was bewitched to look like the sky outside, and to mirror the weather.[1]

History[]

Starry enchanted ceiling

The ceiling at night

There was an Enchanted Ceiling in the Great Hall of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was said that the mimicry of the sky outside was so exact that, at first glance, one would have believed that there was no ceiling at all, and that the hall simply opened upon the heavens.[1]

During the 1890–1891 school year, there was an Enchanted Ceiling in the lower levels of the Astronomy Stairs within the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts, enchanted to look like the night sky, depicting galaxies and stars in rich detail.[3]

Whilst entering the Great Hall for the first time in 1991 for the Sorting Ceremony, Harry Potter heard Hermione Granger whispered to a fellow first-year that the ceiling was, in fact, bewitched and that she read and learnt about it in Hogwarts: A History.[1]

There was also an Enchanted Ceiling in Classroom Eleven, the classroom that was converted to resemble the forest while Firenze was teaching Divination, but unlike the Great Hall, it was only enchanted to show the night sky, rather than the current weather.[2]

The ceiling of the Atrium in the British Ministry of Magic Headquarters also seemed to be enchanted to resemble the sky outside. Golden symbols continually moved across it "like some enormous heavenly noticeboard"; it appeared peacock blue early in the morning, and dark blue in the evening.[4][5]
