- "Antidotes! You should all have prepared your recipes now. I want you to brew them carefully, and then, we will be selecting someone on whom to test one...."
- — Severus Snape to fourth-year Potions students[src]
An antidote was a substance, generally a potion, that would typically counteract poisons.[1]
Description[]
Other antidotes worked against specific ailments or counteracted specific potions. Sometimes time was all that was needed for certain magical effect to wear off, such as in the case of Polyjuice Potion, but others required a special application to counteract such effects.
Antidotes were essential study for Aurors.[2]
The Mandrake formed an essential part of most antidotes.[3] There was a sign at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries reading "Antidotes are anti-don'ts unless approved by a qualified Healer."[4] Antidotes were studied in third-year[5][6] and fourth-year[7][8] Potions classes at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Some poisons could not be cured with antidotes.[9]
Golpalott's Third Law was a complex law concerning the making of antidotes. To put it in basic terms, it stated that blended poison - a poison made by mixing several different poisons together - could not be cured simply by mixing the antidotes of each individual poison together. Rather, one had to find the one ingredient they could add to the blended antidotes that would transform the mixture into a superior antidote that would counteract the blended poison itself.[1]
