Chips are an integral element added in Grand Theft Auto Online as part of The Diamond Casino & Resort update.
Overview[]
Chips work as a separate currency similar to Money, with the difference in that Chips are primarily earned through the casino games inside The Diamond Casino & Resort or the Penthouse. The player's Chip balance is only visible, and constantly so, in areas where chips can be used.
Chips can be acquired with the following methods:
- 5,000 Chips are given to the player once they have purchased the Casino Standard Membership for $500. A bonus of 1,000 Chips can then be collected by the player from the Casino Cashier every real-life day.
- Trading it with their money (or vice versa) at the Casino Cashier booth. Each chip is worth $1. Players can request up to 20,000 chips (50,000 if they are owners of a Master Penthouse) for a certain time and must wait for an in-game day (48 minutes in real life).
- Requesting chips through the Services phone available for penthouse owners.
- Winning any of the casino games available (which depends on the rewards they can give). This also includes the Lucky Wheel, which has a chance of 4 in 20 to earn 10,000-25,000 chips, plus the chance of obtaining chips as the Mystery reward.
- Can also be earned by completing Ms. Baker's Casino Work freemode missions (the usual payout is about 5,000 Chips and $10,000).
The safe in the Casino Penthouse can hold up to 12,000,000 chips, adding a pile of chips and casino plaques for every 1,000,000; any extra chips added do not visibly appear, this is simply a visual change and there is no capped amount on how much the player can hold.
Cashing out chips (exchanging them for cash) at the Casino Cashier booth is done using an arrow meter that starts at 1 to increase or decrease the amount shown. By holding down an arrow, the meter will soon become exponentially faster, allowing players to reach desired amounts quickly. The option to cash out the entire amount at once is also available. Once the chosen amount is confirmed, the resultant money is automatically deposited into the player's Maze Bank account.
As money is the only currency that drops on death, chips are unable to be stolen by other players.
