+ My nephew turned 7 yesterday. I'm still knocked ass flat from my cold, so couldn't attend, but I did do my very best at being an awesome auntie ;)
Pardon the half-scalped Pika lol. )

+ When we were taking out the Christmas decorations, I entertained myself by giving my mom's ornaments an impromptu photo shoot. I figured I could make some Christmas icons, which reminded me why I don't make stock icons. hashtag I Tried part two. )

+ First new treatment for asthma attacks in 50 years.
After 28 days, respiratory symptoms of cough, wheeze, breathlessness and sputum were found to be better with benralizumab. After ninety days, there were four times fewer people in the benralizumab group that failed treatment compared to standard of care with prednisolone.

Treatment with the benralizumab injection took longer to fail, meaning fewer episodes to see a doctor or go to hospital. There was also an improvement in the quality of life for people with asthma and COPD.

+ Why orcas wear dead salmon as 'hats' remains a mystery, scientists say.
In what may seem like a call-back to 1980s whale culture, a resident orca off the coast of Washington state was recently spotted sporting a dead salmon on its head.

The phenomenon was first documented in 1987 when whales from three separate pods were seen wearing salmon on their heads, like a human wears a hat.

I mean, that's delightfully weird!

+ Both [community profile] fandomtrees and [community profile] holiday_wishes are running again this year ♥ Speaking of the latter, was one wish by [personal profile] kingstoken that folks check out the two free Star Trek Spock/McCoy zines they've been involved with: SFW issue 1 and NSFW issue 2.

+ I'm making a second run at Rec-cember this year. Unlikely I'm getting tripped up by slow to non-existent internet, but the only room with a livable temperature at my mom's is the living room, where the TV is on constantly, making it tricky for me to read anything at all. Time will tell. I do at least have some saved up!

So, rec numero uno...

Like, that delightful Fall thought of throwing yourself into a giant pile of leaves and rolling around? But the leaves are democracy. That's it, that's the fic.

One further thing, Picard,” Goldacre said. “Your list of non-citizens resident on the Enterprise to be added to the electoral register – the thirty-two people you mentioned.”

“Yes, ma’am?” Picard asked.

“I noticed that Commander Data was on that list.”

Picard took a deep breath. “Commander Data may be wrongfully denied full citizenship of the Federation,” he said, “but as a sentient being ordinarily resident in Federation territory – in this instance, aboard the Enterprise – he has the right to vote. I have submitted his details for registration on that basis.”

“I’m not sure the courts would agree with that assessment,” Goldacre said.

“I have defended Commander Data’s rights in a court of law before,” Picard replied. “I am quite content to do it again if the circumstances require.”

Musk is absolutely tanking Twitter, so hopefully his fortune alongside it/definitely his image as a person with functional brains. But the very best outcome yet? His assbrained blue checkmark scheme birthed a whole bunch of fake accounts posing as corporation, it it has been a *chef's kiss* journey.

Some one posting as Eli Lilly tweeted insulin was now free, and after it went viral the official account is now out there apologizing to people who might have been tricked by said tweet. Lots more people learning insulin was funded with tax money. That insulin's cheaper everywhere else, and that insulin's inventors sold the patent for a dollar to a university because they wanted everyone to afford it. And now their stocks ARE IN THE FUCKING DITCH. And other insulin-hawking companies are feeling the sting as well.

+ Our state-owned petroleum company Equinor abandoned plans for the world's northernmost oil field, Wisting, in the Arctic. Postponed 4 years, a "holistic assessment". Means all the opposition they got actually worked. I'm so pissed at my country's continued approach to oil, and this is a really big win. Plus, Wisting was always about developing the Barents Sea in general with new infrastructure.

+ Warrior Nun season two just dropped, awwww yeah! I didn't see any talk about s1 but enjoyed it muchly. Great characters, queer stuff, nuns fighting evil!!

+ OK kind of not good news, but today I finally saw a mention of COVID in the newspaper again. At least they've covering it again, and not pretending it's over. Maybe this means I'll have access to the fourth vaccine at some point.

+ All the pundits in the USA predicting a red wave/tsunami/whatever, and being dead wrong. I know things are still shaky, but very happy the election didn't go horribly <3

+ A new record label, La Boîte à Pépites (The Jewel Box), is bringing forgotten female composers out of obscurity. Founded by French cellist Héloïse Luzzati. It builds on the ‘Elles – Women Composers’ festival and yt channel she started to promote forgotten female creators.
“This problem is present from the time we learn music as children,” she said. “We don’t work on any, or almost any, pieces by women composers throughout our studies. They are absent from music theory classes, from music history classes.”

La Boîte à Pépites’ first UK release – which debuted in September – is a three-CD box set of work by late French composer Charlotte Sohy, who died in 1955.

Sohy, a mother-of-seven who survived two world wars, often composed under the name of her grandfather Charles, in a bid to escape prejudice.

Luzzati describes Sohy’s work, which comprises 35 different compositions, as “sometimes impressionistic, sometimes figurative, with colours of Ravel, Chausson or Debussy”.

Works by little-known British composers such as Liza Lehmann, Alice Mary Smith and Adela Maddison are in the pipeline.

+ The Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photography of the Year gallery is a sight to behold.

+ [community profile] holiday_wishes is running again this year, a gifting event in the similar vein of [community profile] fandom_stocking. Requests open on the 15th, in five days.

+ I'm half-way done with putting my Christmas tree up. Decided to actually get some enjoyment out of it before I'm back at work. Holiday potpourri lit, I may nip down to the shop for Christmas soda and some porridge. Maybe marzipan? You know what, yes, definitely marzipan.

+ I posted a roundup of icons I made earlier this year. Hopefully I can get going on a batch for [community profile] somein30's last challenge. The challenge post is a whopper! I'd love to do some icons for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Interview With A Vampire (it's GOOD y'all), maybe Ted Lasso and Our Flag Means Death. Hmmm...

+ I have some lofty plans for my apartment when I get home. Painting to be done, but also a lot of tidying, getting rid of some stuff, finally get my desk up in the spare room. And I remembered my big bag of letter sets I have squirreled away somewhere from when I subscribed to one of those monthly clubs that sent you stuff as a kidlet. So, anybody wanting to do penpalling this Summer? *g* (decent handwriting not included)

+ The EU has finally passed the requirement for phones and (I believe small and medium sized handheld?) electronics to use a standard charger. HUZZAH.

Apple and other smartphone makers will be required to support USB-C as part of a single charging standard for mobile devices across the European Union by as early as the fall of 2024 under a new law announced Tuesday by EU officials.

The legislation is aimed at reducing e-waste and eliminating "cable clutter," said Margrethe Vestager, European Commission Vice President. Under the legislation, according to a release, "mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, earbuds, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers that are rechargeable via a wired cable will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port, regardless of their manufacture."

Each one links to a peer-reviewed study showing improved health and wellbeing of transgender youth who are given access to trans-affirming health care services.

We have the fucking research.

+ 8 Books About Women’s Rage. Saving this link for later, a couple new to me books in there.

+ I’ve had thoughts regarding the death of community culture rolling around in my head for the past few days, and I’m very tempted to try something some would probably consider a dick move. Read more... )

+ Doing so well on my WoT re-read I though this month would be the perfect time to jump in on [community profile] swbookclub’s monthly read - about my darling boy Luke, no less! - but of course Amazon doesn’t carry the kindle version for Luke Skywalker and The Shadows of Mindor. GRUMP. Amazon is the one place I’ve found I can download books from while at sea, so limited options. Guess it wasn’t meant to be, my fave soft Jedi boy.

+ Have a Mary Oliver poem.

WILD GEESE
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clear blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

+ [personal profile] thingswithwings' birthday is today 🥳 and I spotted a birthday wish on Twitter: if anyone was inclined, that you leave a comment on one or more fanworks Can attest that there's many wonderful, affirming, and kinky stuffs in a variety of fandoms to choose from. Being an avid vid watcher, I cannot recommend Queens(Killjoys), Dance apocalyptic(multi), Parachute(Leverage, comfort vid FOR LIFE), and The Price(multi) highly enough. If you're in the mood, maybe stop by and show some love ❤️

+ Parliament unanimously passes bill allowing change to birth certificates. In particular, it will not require people to provide evidence of medical treatment, which can be difficult to access, intrusive, and which the person in question may not want. Go New Zealand, go!

+ The Game Awards happened, and they announced many potentially shiny things! Wonder Woman is getting her own single player game 👏👏👏 I believe somewhat based on the LotR games? (at least, it's by the people behind Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, which has the Nemesis system, and the announcement specifically mentions enemies and allies across an open world) Exciting when thinking of allies *plots collecting ALL THE AMAZONS*, but unnerving when I think of just how shitty the micro transactions were. Choosing to remain optimistic, because getting a big WW game is absolutely a win in my book.
(also, Diana and Kara smooching in the comics???)

The Expanse is getting an outing with Telltale Games, and they also (barely) showed a new single player Star Wars title. There's a The Matrix Unreal Engine demonstration thingy that's free, and I cannot wait to try it when I get home. I know it's flat, but my VR headset is going on hehe. (Trinity better show up tho!!)

+ Chile's Pinera signs historic same-sex marriage bill into law. "All couples who so wish, regardless of their sexual orientation, will be able to live love, marry and form a family with all the dignity and legal protection they need and deserve," Piñera said.

Chile has long had a conservative reputation even among its strongly Roman Catholic peers in Latin America. Still, most Chileans now support same-sex marriage and have shown signs of becoming more liberal on social and cultural issues in recent years.

* DISCO is gonna be available internationally, all praise the fury of fandom \o/ (deets)

* Both crew members are out of isolation, nothing seems to have spread so we're in the clear huzzah 🥳

* Read an excellent piece today! FRAMING FANDOM HISTORY: THE EFFECTS OF WHITENESS ON MEMORIALIZATION. So, yes, “the youth” should know their history, but perhaps it is time that “fandom elders” reckoned with theirs as well.

* Itch.io has a Creator Sale today, meaning every penny you spend goes directly to the creators, zero fees. Maybe snoop around for some excellent indie games? Haven't personally tried Knife Sisters, but found it through a discussion thread and it sounded Most Excellent. "a dark, explorative, and erotic visual novel about emotions, power and dependence. Follow Leo during six intense weeks of budding emotions, occult rituals, and consensual kinky sex." For tabletop rpgs, I'd recommend looking at Imaginarium, a two-player tarot-driven game, or Into The Black if you feel like assembling a ragtag crew of debt-ridden spacefarers. You can also find Thirsty Sword Lesbians and Lady Blackbeard among the more well-known indies.

* Finally watched Shang-Chi, enjoyed it muchly, but boy did it smack me in the face with how old I am. Not once but twice! Savage.

* 50% off on homewares at Society6 meant I could finally pull the trigger on a big wall tapestry to decorate my cabin with. So very bored of staring at empty white walls. (I don't even have a porthole!) Also picked up an art print to put in the rotation for my shelf at home. Lady knights, I be swooning... *happy sighs*
