The 2025 exhibition is now open! Both the campus and broader community are invited to view the exhibition at the FedEx Global Education Center. The 2025 exhibition can also be viewed through our online virtual gallery.

Each year UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to submit photos that capture global experiences, connections and perspectives as part of the Carolina Global Photography Competition. Finalists are displayed in the FedEx Global Education Center as part of an annual exhibition.

In the past 20 years, the Carolina community has submitted around 8,000 photos as part of this competition, and more than 500 photographs have been displayed.

Submission Details

The competition is currently closed and will reopen in summer 2025 for the next cycle. Register for the UNC Global Affairs newsletter for an announcement when the next competition opens.

Guidelines

Before you submit, please review our guidelines for ethical photography. If there are identifiable subjects in your photo, you must acknowledge that you acquired their consent.

A brief caption, less than 150 words, must be submitted with each photo. The caption should describe the subject and include any relevant global or cultural context. If your photo is selected as a finalist, UNC Global Affairs will review and edit the caption, as needed, before exhibiting your photo.

There is no restriction on the time period in which the photo was taken. Entries are judged on the basis of artistic merit and context.

Competition FAQ

You may submit up to three photographs through our PollUnit submission form. Register for the UNC Global Affairs newsletter for an announcement when the next competition opens.

In line with the educational mission of the Carolina Global Photography Exhibition, photo captions should help deepen viewers’ understanding of the regional and/or cultural context of the photograph. Below are examples of successful photo captions that have been displayed in past exhibitions:

  • Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Singapore’s Little India is Little Bangladesh, a lesser-known neighborhood where many migrant workers go to seek the comfort of home. There in the office of Banglar Kantha, Southeast Asia’s only Bengali newspaper, Masud finds peace each week in calling his family and playing his harmonium. The Banglar Kantha, which means “voice of Bengal,” provides opportunities for migrant workers to submit written pieces as well as physical space for them to gather, read, play music and rest.

  • The Benedictine monks of Keur Moussa Abbey have spent the last 60 years perfecting the design of the kora, a stringed instrument carved from the body of a calabash gourd. The monks build their kora harps in a small workshop on the abbey grounds and offer lessons to teach others. The instrument is featured prominently in the music of Keur Moussa’s masses, where hymns are composed and sung in the monks’ native languages, including Diola, Wolof, and Serer.
