"I don't think the virtual particles produced in the vacuum gravitate"

They do - given that they're the basis for Hawking Radiation (one of the virtual particles goes down the black hole, the other thus becomes real to compensate and reduces the mass of the hole as a result)

"not having estimated bills anymore"

I get an email once a month from my (non-big-6) supplier, asking for a reading ... takes 2 minutes to reply with the numbers (might as well use advert breaks usefully after all...), so why install a gadget to do it for me?

Gio Ciampa

Re: smart meter != reduction in energy consumption

Exactly this ... unless they really do come installed with magic energy-saving pixies that do it all for you...?

Talk in Trump's tweets tells whether tale is true: Code can mostly spot Prez lies from wording

Gio Ciampa

Re: Ignorance can be very powerful

"We give £350M a week to the EU"

Technically even that statement is false - given that it's the pre-rebate figure - so we actually hand over rather less than that (and then most of it comes back our way - in effect - through EU spending)

I gather someone is trying to sue Boris over that whole bus thing... popcorn at the ready...

Oh, I wish it could be Black Friday every day-aayyy, when the wallets start jingling but it's still a week till we're paiii-iid

Gio Ciampa

Re: Today IS payday...

I ended up making sure all the bills were timed for the first fortnight of the month for that very reason.

(I've gone from "Last Tuesday" to "28th" to "Last Friday" to "25th" over the years...)

Gio Ciampa

Today IS payday...

...as the 25th is at the weekend, so they bring it forward for some reason...

...not that I've read any of the 3 million (it seems) special offer emails I've had this week.

(That said, I do have a couple of things I need to buy soonish, so I'll be playing the "what odds on those things not being in a sale" game later...)

For all the excitement, Pie may be Android's most minimal makeover yet – thankfully

Gio Ciampa

You have been able to backup most things via adb since android 4.0.

"Most" being the operative word - given that there is a flag that apps can set which will block the ADB backup process from happening (for that app)

That said - there are apps out there that will (without root being needed) perform ADB backups on a per-app basis (rather than a monolithic single file) - Helium by Clockworkmod being the first one that comes to mind (it was the one that informed me about the no-backup flag too, as it happens)
