Quote - "EPOC, of course, would go on to become the foundation for Symbian OS, now owned by Nokia and relegated to its feature phones."

Due to the very best efforts of Nokia (read Elop), Symbian is very nearly, although thankfully not quite, dead. When the time for the final obituary does actually come can El Reg please make sure that someone who actually knows what Symbian is/was (hell, maybe even someone who actually uses it) is involved.

For hopefully the last time :- SYMBIAN IS A SMARTPHONE OS! and is NOT used in Nokia feature phones. S60/Anna/Belle (Symbian) ARE NOT S40 (featurephone OS)!!!

Nokia's Q4 'beat expectations' despite ongoing sales slump

Symbian sales

" Nokia sold just 2.2 million Symbian phones in the quarter "

with no new products, no advertising, no network deals and practically no availability. Not bad going in my opinion when you compare it to their Windows Phone efforts.

Web stat WTF: iOS beats Android 3 to 1, iOS and Android tied

Re: What I find odd..

Symbian may have been given a date of execution but that doesn't mean the huge number of devices in circulation have suddenly stopped working. What I find really odd is that Statcounter seems to think that no one with a S40 phone ever used the web until March 2012 and that the decline in Symbian since that time matches almost exactly the increase in S40.

Something's not quite right with them there stats me thinks.

Re: 'tis odd

Symbian can support various resolutions (e.g. E6 - 640 x 480). It's just that nokia have had there head so far up their own arse for so long that didn't spot the need to move on. Now that Symbian's EOL'd it would be pointless to introduce bigger resolutions as it would bugger up existing apps and devs aren't exactly queuing out the door to write new ones.

FFS! S40 is not Symbian!!! (Asha 302)

I'd think a site as esteemed as El Reg could get this most simple of things straight. And what about the E5, E6 or E7. A little older than the 302 but all far, far superior (and been around about as long as the HTC Cha Cha so still relevant based on your choice of devices).

@introiboad...

Sony Ericsson's last Symbian phones and the Samsung i8190 were Cortex A8's so there's no OS limitation. Nokia just seem to have a fetish for arm11. Hopefully the first batch of 1Ghz Symbian phones due shortly will be using ST-Ericsson's u8500 (dual Cortex A9).

'Health and safety killjoys' kill cheese-rolling race

FAIL

Good old Daily Mail

Nice to see some non-biased reporting in the good old Daily Fail. For those who agree with them, go and actually read the artical.

No-one has made any mention of the actual cheese rolling being a problem, it actually looks quite fun and wouldn't mind a go myself. The only problem they have is too many people want to watch a bunch of fun loving nutters roll arse over tit after a lump of curdled cow juice which probably clogs up every road for miles around causing problems for emergency services and the like.

If we're going to slate H&S (and yes, sometimes it does warrant it and yes, I'm an "elf 'n' safety" bod) let's at least get the facts straight first.

"Health and Safety Gestapo" b0110x

Here starteth the rant.... Yes, as well as being a sideline tech-head, I'm a member of the supposed dreaded H&S Gestapo (even worse I work for local goverment!) and, in our defence, I want to make a few things clear. Most 'conkers bonkers', 'wrap 'em up in cotton wool', 'ban Xmas decorations' type decisions are not made by us professionals but by people who have no idea of what risk is or are looking for a) an excuse not to do something, or b) their 15 minutes of journalistic fame.

Of course kids should play rugby, climb trees and find out the hard way that no matter how tempting that mud pie looks, it tastes like crap. I'm also a Scout leader and I regularly dangle kids from rock faces on the end of a bit of rope and teach them how to be budding pyromaniacs. Without this experience kids will just turn into a bunch of unsociable, pale skinned fatties that sit at home with no human contact beyond their favourite social networking site.

As a fellow trade that is often unfairly maligned, how about not propogating the typical H&S stereotype and I'll promise to stop slating the IT department every time they tell me I'm not allowed to do something as simple as add a new printer.

Rant over.
