The NBA’s All-Star game is set to undergo major format changes, with four teams set to compete in the event as opposed to the traditional two. The new pickup-style format will consist of two semifinal games, which will play up to 40 points, with the winners advancing to a first-to-25-point final. According to ESPN, there had been serious discussions to have three teams of eight and the winning team of the Rising Stars game to compete in the tournament. NBA officials discussed the new idea with the competition committee consisting of governors, team executives, players, coaches and union personnel. The All-Star game has been subject to criticism in recent years, with fans and pundits noticing the decline in competitive edge during the contest. The criticism has prompted commissioner Adam Silver to consider changes to the game, noting that “We all want to do a better job providing competition and entertainment for our fans.” The game returned to the traditional West v East concept last season after a six-year stint where team captains, who were decided by the voting, selected teams in a draft-style format.
