Sleet and Snow

Elegant lady topper

Yes I said snow. I had to take the car into the garage for its Service and MOT and boy did I have fun trying to find a needle in a haystack spot to abandon my car while I dropped Marion at the school gate.

I then went into town, handed the keys to Jim, gave him my parents phone number (it’s Mum’s car after all) in case any work needed to be done on it (because I would be at swimming), got myself a drink and then walked back to school. It was very windy, but at that point in time it was relatively dry. When I got to about 200 yards away from the school it started raining, but I didn’t get too wet, but no sooner was in the classroom – all this and I was sitting down at 9.20am – the heavens opened.

We got a bit wet going to the bus, then obviously swimming, it was still raining when we came back out and then it started to sleet and snow. After getting off the bus to come home, the main road was like a fast flowing river, the pavements were full of puddles and I had soaking wet jeans and feet.

Apparently, according to weather reports, we have been threatened with heavy snowfalls this week and next.

So as soon as I got in I stripped off in the hall and put my tracksuit trousers on to warm myself up and I called Mum to see if the garage had called. The car needs a couple of areas welded, which they can do, but might take them a couple of days. Hopefully I’ll get it back before next Tuesday so I can go to my ceramics class to get going on Mum’s birthday present.

I saw on the news that a school had sent a 15 year old girl about her truancy and to get herself back to regular attendance or she’d be banned from the school prom. The thing is that this young girl died all of a sudden two months. Her parents were naturally very upset and all the school could comment was ‘it was a database error’.

Having been on the receiving end of ‘database error’ from school with my own daughter, I can say that it was human error and the fact that the human concerned (office staff) hadn’t bothered to update the system.

The garage called just after 3pm to say that there was a bit of extra welding that needed to be done, did we want to go ahead with it, but there would be a small delay as he wouldn’t be able to get it done until tomorrow afternoon. I said yes to go ahead and if I could have the car back before Tuesday, I’d be ever so grateful, but just to do the welding when he could fit it in.

I need the car for my daughter’s busy social life!!!

Does anyone know what ‘brown’ is in French please TIA

Thank you to Heather and Ann for their help with the french word for brown. I thought it was brun from my minimal knowledge of french at school. I was checking because I hadn’t wanted to say anything in front of the class yesterday when the French Dialect Disc they were learning from said that marron was brown. I thought that marron was marroon?

Shredding

Shredder

OK at midnight last night I looked out the front door window and wondered what on earth had happened to the roof of the car, so I went out to investigate. First thing that hit me was how cold it was and then the snow hit me and that’s when I realised that it was snow on top of the car.

We didn’t get much, unlike parts of the country, but it was a light dusting on the lawn this morning. It turned out to be a lovely sunny day, so I hung out some washing while I popped into town and had to race out to get it in again just after lunch because it started snowing heavily again.

I decided today that I am going to get rid of a load of paperwork that I no longer need and get rid of the bank statements for an account I no longer have and has been closed for two years now, so when I was out seeing if I could get a cheap pair of leggings for Marion, I popped into Ryman and bought myself a cross cut shredder and I spent the entire afternoon shredding bank statements.

I might sound sad, but I had a great time!! I still have plenty more paperwork to get rid of, but after emptying the shredder bin 3 times, I decided I’d had enough for today. The shredder has a 16 litre capacity (180 sheets), so I did plenty of recycling. It would have made great bedding if I’d still had the gerbils.

I have made a Birthday card today, for a Pisces birthday, which I’m going to put onto ebay. Photo tomorrow.

Now off to put a few stitches into the waistband for Marion’s new leggings just to tighten it up a little. She’s like me; tall with no waist, she’s already 3ft 9″ and a half – don’t forget that all important half!

More White Stuff

Britty Kitty Jan-Feb

We walked, or rather skated, to the end of the road this morning and Teresa stopped and gave us a lift. She asked me if I thought that we’d seen the last of the snow now and I said that I reckoned we’d have more to come over the next few days.

A couple of the other Mum’s heard me and told me I was just mad to think something like that, I told them I was no weather expert, but just looking at the sky proved to me that there was more snow just waiting to come down at some stage today. They wouldn’t have it and just laughed at the thought of it.

Britty Kitty March-Apr

So who got the last laugh? Yeah that’s right ME. It was flickering on and off from around 11am and even though it wasn’t heavy while we waited for the kids to come out, I kept saying it was snowing. Not one of them believed me. It started coming down thicker and faster as we were walking out the school gate, so I started laughing back at them. I have been correct about this weather every day for the past two weeks, even to the point of saying they’d close the school last Thursday and I was right about that too.

Britty Kitty May-Jun

I have no stitching to show, I’ve just not been stitching or crafting, just clearing away some of the crafting and stitching things that I know I’m not going to use anymore, or have never used and putting it all into a box to sell on ebay after half term is over.

I do however like these Brittercup series of charts and depending on how well the sales of things go, I may just treat myself to them.

Red and White

ATC Red & White 2

Well we have had a lot more snow in the past few days, which has been lovely. Marion played in the garden and I sat at the dining table reading my book and watching her having fun. I’ve now read quite a few books just in the past couple of weeks and all the books I got from the library the other day are finished.

Yesterday Marion came out of school with a sticker and she mentioned she had been given a chocolate finger and then stopped. Yes trying to get information out of my child is like trying to get blood out of a stone. I had to prize the rest of the information out of her, but it turns out that she’s now on a higher level for her reading, passing the target she had been set and the expectations of both Year 2 teachers.

Way to go Marion, keep it up, I know you can do it (when you set your mind to it).

Today I decided to venture out in the car, hmm got as far as a couple of inches up the drive, but no further as it just kept skidding. I walked to the post office instead!!

The second of the two Red & White theme ATC’s has arrived at its destination and the lady loves it, especially as it’s iris folding and she’s never seen iris folding before.

I just need to make the one for my local craft shop and also the one for an ‘Out of Town’ craft shop ATC swap.

Truly Unbelievable

The Snowman

Yes I know you’ve seen this snowman photo before, but this snowman was also  in my garden until around 3.00pm yesterday. I know that because I had gone out to the garage to get some bits from the freezer.

Some thieving lowlife has stolen it.

Who would steal a snowman from a six year old child? Oh yes it could possibly be the teenage yobs who were laughing at the “crappy snowman” on Friday afternoon (their words, not mine). Marion was understandably upset and very angry, I can’t say that I was amused either.

It must have happened when we were in the kitchen baking scones.  Marion ate 4 straight away to cheer herself up and has eaten the two remaining ones this morning for breakfast, with lashings of home made blackcurrant jam.

My Snow Angel

Marion on top of Snowball

I got up this morning, looked out the window and it was snowing heavily, so I made Marion get up and look out the window, she was so excited and got dressed the quickest I’ve ever seen. Wellie boots were on and there were screams of ‘hurry up Mummy or I’ll be late for school’, this was at 8.25am. I’d put the radio on this morning, something I don’t ever think about doing normally, but I never heard anything about school closure, so I decided we could walk there and come home if it turned out it was closed.

Snow Angel

We got half way round the estate and there was a little girl standing at the window waving and her Mum on the phone and she told me to go home again as the school was closed. We came back, Marion immediately started chucking snowballs at me, then we came in for a hot drink and then back out again quickly to build a snowman.

The Snowman

Oh what fun we had, but she had to stop half way and make a snow angel and then we carried on after a big snowball fight with a couple parents and half a dozen kids. It was a great laugh, you’d think we’d been out there all day, but it’s only 11.50am. It’s still snowing heavily and we’re expecting even more over the weekend, so we’ll be having even more fun in the snow 🙂

My Christmas Tree

This poor wee thing is my christmas tree that I grew from seed in 1998, bent over from the weight of the snow. I didn’t want it to break, so I have shaken off as much snow as I can.

I Will Sleep Tonight

Marion snow 2.2.09 - 2

My cat Cheeky sat at the front door wanting out around 9pm last night, so I opened the door and she hunkered down and started growling. I looked out for another cat, couldn’t find one, so got down to her level to see what she was looking at……. yes it was the snowman and she refused to step foot out the door, but was more than prepared to put up a fight.

A while later I knew she was desperate to do a wee, but wouldn’t use the litter tray, so I had to physically pick her up and put her out the back door and she made her feelings quite clear!!!

Rascal, on the other hand, practically fell out the door to go out and play. He was having so much fun making little snowballs with his front paws and then throwing them up in the air to land on his head. It was so commical to watch and he didn’t want to come in.

One of our snow people in the back garden had her head on her shoulder when we got up this morning, obviously the snow in the night was too much for it!!  Marion did go out and try to fix it, but it wouldn’t move, so she gave up.

Boy am I shattered. We walked to school in even more snow, plus a fair bit of sludge, I walked back home in that snow and sludge. I then had to go out again to the post office, no way was I digging out my car to drive on the ice rink that is the estate.

The post office is about a mile away and although it’s a lovely walk, it’s quite hard going when you’re trudging through snow and ice, so when I got in again I made myself a cappuccino and watched a bit of tv with some stitching. Then of course it was time to go back out again in that snow and ice to pick Marion up from school.

She collected snow all the way home, had a snowball fight with Megan, but they were both happy and having fun. Marion then carried on playing in the back garden when we got home, until she was either too cold, or had just had enough.

I reckon we’re going to get more of the white stuff, the sky is full of it once again and they’re forecasting more.

So as there’s no Rainbows tonight due to the weather, I can sit down and relax with some stitching and not have to go out another two times taking her and fetching her.

Still The UK ;)

Marion snow 2.2.09

Well we weren’t one of the lucky ones who had to abandon going to school today because of the snow (like some parts of the country), but we still managed to make the snowman’s head on the way there (one of us did anyway!) and we were early to boot.

I brought the head home with me, with strict instructions to keep it ‘warm’ and safe. I left it by the front door. I came in and made myself a cuppa as I couldn’t feel my hands or feet. The snow stopped for a while and the sun came out, which usually happens and the snow has all melted by the time she comes out of school.

Marion snow 2.2.09 - 3

Today has been different, it has carried on all day and it just kept coming down heavier on the way to school. They were letting the kids out as soon as the parents arrived and the headteacher was encouraging them to have a snowball fight and losing badly LOL

Marion snow 2.2.09 - 4

By the time we got home Marion was complaining she was cold and forget building a snowman, she wanted a hot chocolate. That lasted all of half an hour and she then decided we should go out and build a snowman, which we did. This is the first one, built in the front garden.

Marion snow 2.2.09 - 5

Then of course I was informed that the back garden ‘will be lonely’ if we don’t make a family of them, so we went through and she made these two. I was told I had made one good one, but I’d never be able to make any other nice ones, so leave it to the expert.

Marion snow 2.2.09 - 6

I had the occassional “don’t just stand there Mummy, help me then” and I kept telling her that I wasn’t allowed, so carry on herself. She proceeded to throw another snowball at me and got me right on the chin and it all went down my neck, brrrrr  These are the Mummy and Marion snow people that she made in the back garden. It was dark by the time she’d finished, but she was happy and content.

It’s still coming down heavy and apparently we’re to expect it even heavier throught the night and tomorrow. I wonder if we’ll end up with so much that we won’t be going to school.

Snow is Cold

Snow 1.2.09

This is how my back garden looked at around 2pm. We have even more of it now and it is still snowing.

We’re to expect even more in the next few days, with the cold weather coming in from the Russian front. Oh yay, maybe I’ll get to build a snow family 🙂

ATC Red & White theme received

I took part in an ATC swap on swapbot, the theme was red & white for February. We had two partners, sending out one ATC to each partner. The ones I sent haven’t been received yet, but I received my first one yesterday. The lady also sent some ATC papers and I love them.

I’m enjoying making these ATC’s, it’s just something a little different.
