Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML)
Sophisticated Equipment, Unique Materials
The Advanced Manufacturing Lab facilitates partnerships between LLNL, industry, and academia to address manufacturing challenges across a range of commercial and government projects.
LLNL invents and develops some of the world’s most sophisticated manufacturing equipment as well as advanced materials which are all housed at the AML. Unparalleled modeling and simulation capabilities using high-performance computing (HPC), unique materials, lasers and optics are all also part of LLNL’s capability base. AML collaborators can utilize these specialized resources to accelerate market-driven innovation and reduce production costs and time, while contributing outside expertise towards mission-relevant projects at LLNL.
The AML is part of the Livermore Valley Open Campus (LVOC)—a 110-acre open and unclassified innovation hub for stimulating collaborative projects with external partners in government, industry, and academia. LVOC is a joint initiative of the NNSA, LLNL, and Sandia National Laboratories.
AML Capabilities
Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory capabilities include designing high-performance materials, architected materials and structures, devices, components, and assemblies enabled by innovative HPC modeling and simulation; developing unique, custom, high-quality feedstocks and nanomaterials; and inventing and maturing advanced manufacturing processes.
What We’re Working On
A recent industry partnership involved the AML, LLNL researchers, and Silicon Valley-based biotech startup Artveoli. It resulted in a project whose aim is to freshen indoor air and improve health by combining CO2-devouring photosynthetic algae and LLNL’s carbon capture microcapsules into a flat panel device disguised as a work of art.
