COMMUNITY & EDUCATION
Engaging with Our Neighbors
Invested in Community- engaged Research
For 70 years, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has conducted research in the public interest. We are uniquely positioned — physically and culturally — between California’s Silicon Valley and Central Valley, contributing to the state’s dynamic economy and helping to tackle some of its toughest problems.
From engaging with the next generation of Livermore employees through STEM programming to supporting our neighbors through charitable giving to leveraging our expertise in pursuit of renewable energy and carbon neutrality, we are a proud and involved member of our local community.
Community Giving
For more than 40 years, Lawrence Livermore employees have supported more than 420 local charities and organizations in the greater Tri-Valley region. The HOME campaign, the Lab’s employee giving program, has donated more than $3 million to charitable organizations every year since 2009.
Economic Impact
In fiscal year 2023, LLNL awarded more than $1.26 billion in procurements — including $453 million awarded to 36 California-based companies — to businesses for a broad range of products and services that support the Laboratory’s overall mission.
Environment, Safety and Health
Lawrence Livermore is committed to environmental stewardship and the protection of the health and safety of its employees, visitors and surrounding community. LLNL adheres to international standards in the performance of this important stewardship responsibility and provides regular reports on our environmental efforts.
Education Program
The Science Education Program at Lawrence Livermore provides professional development instruction to in-service and pre-service teachers, as well as student enrichment opportunities ranging from field trips to virtual tours to online videos and science experiments students can try at home.
Discovery Center
The Discovery Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory provides in-person and virtual visitors with a window into our science and technology. Teachers and students are invited to participate in Lawrence Livermore’s Fun with Science field trips, which are provided free of charge to local elementary schools.
Tours
Community tours are free and open to the public, offering visitors a view into exciting, state-of-the-art research programs, facilities and scientific discoveries at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. We’re proud to showcase our use of science and technology in pursuit of our overarching national security mission.
Employee and Retiree Resources
Lawrence Livermore provides a variety of support resources for employees, retirees and contractors, including a free classified advertising service, memorialization of employees who have passed on and a regular publication that highlights the people who make up the Laboratory.
