Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from German Büfett, from French buffet.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]буфе́т • (bufét) m inan (genitive буфе́та, nominative plural буфе́ты, genitive plural буфе́тов)
- sideboard, cupboard
- snack bar, lunchroom, refreshment room, buffet
- (historical) larder, pantry (a room for storing food and dishes and preparing snacks and tea)
Usage notes
[edit]- This word refers more to a place than to a method of serving food, in contrast with the English word buffet. Hence it takes the preposition в (v, “in, at; to”) when answering the questions где? (= в буфе́те) and куда? (= в буфе́т). In Russian, the method of serving food is referred to as шведский стол (švedskij stol, “smorgasbord”, literally “Swedish table”).
