Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Politicians
Points of interest related to Politicians on Wikipedia: Category – WikiProject – Deletions – Cleanup |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Politicians. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Politicians|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Politicians. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

“This individual does not meet Wikipedia’s notability guidelines. They are neither a politician nor a public figure of significance. Being a small-time criminal convicted and serving a sentence in a murder case does not establish notability. There are millions of individuals worldwide who face incarceration, and this alone is not a criterion for inclusion on Wikipedia.” Spider1217 (talk) 20:13, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

As the primary perpetrator of the assassination of Phoolan Devi, a prominent national figure in India, there's a wealth of SigCov readily available online. The argument against the subject's notability is completely off-base, as the volume and quality of sources documenting the incident and its impact easily fulfill GNG.--— MimsMENTOR talk 08:49, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

- Comment: The blog sources weren't at all difficult to replace. He was profiled plenty of times in the media when he stood for leadership of UKIP, though the profiles are largely similar to one another and not tremendously long (Broughton came fourth and seems to have sunk without trace). Being a losing candidate in a national paerliamentary election doesn't give much weight in my view, and the current weight (and unsourced analysis) in the current Wikipedia article is not warranted. I'd probably incline towards "Weak delete" and maybe mention the candidates for UKIP leader, in the UKIP Wikipedia article.Sionk (talk) 00:33, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

I do not see any SIGCOV coverage in the cited sources. I have checked every source cited in the article and found that they consist of passing mentions, press releases, and interviews, which do not count toward notability. - Delete. I looked over the article when my watchlist notified me the old merge/redirect had been undone (26 Nov 2024). I don't see reliable sources that demonstrate notability to meet WP:BIO. Seems like a WP:ONEEVENT situation, and everything relevant to that is already covered at HAARP conspiracy theories. - LuckyLouie (talk) 21:30, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment I reverted the redirection because it took place unilaterally after a "keep" result at AfD, and one person on the talk page objected to it being redirected with no discussion or consensus so it should have been reverted at the time. I'm fine with the redirect to HAARP being reinstated, but figured that this should happen after a discussion rather than on the whims of one editor. Chessrat (talk, contributions) 23:01, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: I ran IAbot on this, with the results "Rescuing 2 sources and tagging 0 as dead." Running IAbot to rescue broken links as part of the AfD process is usually a good idea. Eastmain (talk • contribs) 23:27, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Keep- whilst I didn't originally have a position here and only restored the article for procedural reasons, having had a search it appears that there are several sources independently covering Begich and particularly his business ventures with his son (I have added some to the article), which is probably sufficient notability to be worthy of an article. Chessrat (talk, contributions) 02:26, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- None of which appear to be in the article. IN fact (according to the article) all he has ever done is published 2 fringe books, appeared on some Frine media shows and stood as a fringe candidate in elections. Slatersteven (talk) 09:22, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- I am surprised to see that among the cited sources, most are actually about Begich's father or his son. If he only gets passing mention in stories about other people and things, that is a pretty good indication he's not notable on his own. - LuckyLouie (talk) 13:19, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Seems to be only notable for his relationship to well-known Alaskan politicians and for his promotion of HAARP. If he's already covered in the HAARP article (and presumably mentioned in his brother/father's articles), then that seems adequate to me. EasyAsPai (talk)
- Delete for the reason noted above, already sufficiently covered in the HAARP article Conspiracies theories section. It has to be further noted that Nick Begich is only the co-author of Angels Don't Play this HAARP. Fails WP:NPOL. A staff member at the Office of the Vice President of the Philippines does not count toward WP:NPOL Ibjaja055 (talk) 05:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Keep – Multiple secondary sources such as The Philippine Star, Daily Tribune and GMA News Online have covered this government official from the Office of the Vice President (OVP). The OVP's questionable use of confidential funds under VP Sara Duterte has been among the top issues discussed in Philippine politics this year, if not the topmost (alongside tensions in the South China Sea and the POGO menace), and much of the Philippine media has been extensively covering the hearings conducted on this matter by the House Committee on Good Government in the past few months ([7][8][9][10][11]).
- On November 5, Acosta was among the seven OVP officials who issued a position letter asking that the house congressional inquiry into their budget use be terminated ([12]), and by November 11 was among the four OVP officials ordered arrested based on a contempt citation issued by the committee for their non-attendance at the hearings ([13]). During the November 20 hearing, OVP chief of staff Zuleika T. Lopez and a branch manager of Land Bank of the Philippines gave testimonies that pinpointed Acosta as the OVP official who directly handled the confidential funds of the vice president ([14][15]). The varied independent coverage cited in this paragraph alone, in my view, merits notability for the article; further coverage in the media is also anticipated in the aftermath of the testimonies given in the Nov. 20 hearing. LionFosset (talk) 06:09, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

- This person has not ran for public office i.e. not a politician, so I don't know how WP:NPOL applies. She appears to be more of a career civil servant or a bureaucrat. This person is notable for one event which is on Sara Duterte's alleged corruption, so the best solution is to merge and redirect this with the article that discusses that, or if that doesn't exist, transform this BLP article to such an article. Though I concede to the fact that the person is largely notable for one event so far (i.e. Onel de Guzman, a private citizen who created the ILOVEYOU virus), numerous secondary sources have covered the person not just as a probable participant in Duterte's unusual confidential fund use from 2022 to 2023, but as a government official ordered to be arrested after she was cited in contempt for her continuous absence from house committee hearings in spite of two subpoenas ([16][17][18][19]). VP Duterte refuses to leave the House of Rep. detention center holding her chief of staff Zuleika Lopez; 2. VP Duterte goes on a tirade against the House committee hearings and curses at President Marcos, his wife and House Speaker Romualdez, claiming to have already spoken with a contract killer to target them in the event she herself is assassinated; 3. VP Chief of Staff Zuleika Lopez faints from an anxiety attack at 3 a.m. and is brought from the detention center to a hospital; 4. Executive Sec. - All the more reason to merge and redirect as per my argument above. What's notable is what's happening, not her. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:43, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

This is similar with what the proponents in Talk:Alice Guo#Requested move 24 May 2024 on moving that article to "2023–2024 Bamban raids", only that it was overtaken by the fact that Guo had surely attained notability and deserves a biographical article, unlike this person, or the pawns of Sara Duterte, the Marcoses, Romualdezes and everyone else. Howard the Duck (talk) 01:27, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Howard the Duck: I would be amenable to this, actually. However, use the former title (with some tweaking), not the latter. "Mary Grace Piattos" is just one of the many details questioned in the confidential fund use by the OVP. LionFosset (talk) 03:57, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Acosta falls ill during the Nov. 25 budget hearing (and brought out of the premises to VMMC with VP Duterte in tow) after admitting that she disbursed the confidential funds to the VP Security Chief in 2022-2023 on Duterte's orders. She is the second VP aide to faint and be brought to VMMC after Lopez. Humorous note: The Akbayan Partylist memefied the Duterte-Acosta photo. LionFosset (talk) 18:54, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

My only possible alternative to deletion would be to draftify until after the election as she apparently stands a decent chance at holding Bríd Smith's seat in Dublin South Central, but I dunno if that quite meets WP:DRAFTREASON point three.ser! (chat to me - see my edits) 10:53, 20 November 2024 (UTC) - Delete per nom or Draftify per Ser! - draftifying is a possible outcome from a deletion discussion and it would seem reasonable to not delete if, as you say, she does stand a reasonable change at being elected. - Keep because she's a nationally prominent local politician and easily the most prominent PBP representative who isn't already a TD. She was at their manifesto launch e.g. and there's been another profile of her published in national media since the article was published. (https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/11/20/i-have-two-kids-who-are-working-in-the-civil-service-and-they-cant-afford-to-buy-a-house-candidate-told-on-doorstep/). Could tolerate draftifying if you're trying to hold the line on local reps. Snoooooooopywaves (talk) 11:12, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- "She turned up to a party election event during an election" is not the compelling argument for notability you think it is... BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 11:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Draftify seems fair enough. She has about evens chances of holding the seat for PBP, and it saves the trouble of a fresh start next week if she does. In response to Snoooooooopywaves, coverage of a candidacy during an election doesn’t satisfy notability under WP:POLITICIAN. She is being promoted by PBP because they want to hold Smith’s seat. If she does so, we can restore the article from its draft form. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 11:48, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Keep: According to WP:NPOL, elected local officials can be notable if they meet WP:GNG. The RS Noticeboard says the Irish Times and The Ditch are reliable. It's barely notable, but notable nonetheless.--DesiMoore (talk) 15:38, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, but only if that's actually significant coverage. The article from The Ditch is not significant coverage of De Nortúin, instead just referring to a complaint she made about an actually notable politician in Leo Varadkar. The Irish Times coverage posted here is a routine feature on a candidate going door to door which does nothing to define notability, while the one in the article itself is about her and two other councillors criticising the lack of maternity leave pay - again, not defining notability for her. ser! - Delete. WP:NPOL is not met. WP:GNG is not met. (None of the sources in the article contribute to notability - being the subject's own LinkedIn profile, an interview, trivial passing mentions and the same type of coverage which we might expect for any local politician/candidate. Of the sources more generally available, returned from a WP:BEFORE search, may include some from reliable sources (like Irish Times or RTÉ) but all of these are also either passing mentions, interviews or the same type of electioneering coverage that is applied to any and (often for "balance" reasons) all candidates in an election.) FWIW, I'd just about be "OK" with draftify as an alternative to deletion. Until after the coming election. But, in all honesty, it wouldn't be my first choice... Guliolopez (talk) 20:07, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - The Phoenix has an entire profile[20] on her that I (or others) could use to expand the article and help meet SIGCOV. As User:DesiMoore points out, elected local officials can be notable if they meet WP:GNG. I created Hazel Chu when she was a councillor because there was SIGCOV in Irish papers on her. So whether De Nortúin becomes a TD or not shouldn't be the decider. Sources, not position, denote GNG. Derek Blighe and Philip Dwyer, for example, have never held elected official.
- I'm surprised other Irish users did not check The Phoenix, which carries two profiles of a young person and older person of interest each issue, when seeking sources on De Nortúin. CeltBrowne (talk) 11:15, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Relisting because the 2024 Irish general election is in two days and the relevant result can then be discussed here.

- It looks like results will be out on Saturday or Sunday [21]. Toadspike [Talk] 09:34, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Draftify - the article was probably premature, as her local rep. status is not sufficient, but The Phoenix is a generally reliable source and can give good depth, and if elected, qualification would be clear, and it saves deletion and REFUND. Only 1-2 more days needed to be clear anyway. SeoR (talk) 12:29, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - The article was 12 hours old at the time of this nomination and since has had several additional edits by users other than the originator, it's excessive to delete an article that had less than 24 hours to be developed. Galdrack (talk) 14:25, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - Can't see any common sense reason for the proposed deletion. She isn't a very minor sports "star" as are thousands of undeleted entries?? Sarah777 (talk) 16:20, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Update: De Nortúin was not elected as a TD in Friday's general election. [22] This means she does not automatically meet NPOL. (This does not affect whether or not she meets the GNG.) Pinging editors whose !votes this may affect: Iveagh Gardens, Snoooooooopywaves. Toadspike [Talk] 22:12, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Also @SeoR, sorry that I missed you the first time around. Toadspike [Talk] 22:14, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Right, now the subject has not been elected, I've rescinded my draftification idea. I'm glad at least some coverage has been found (and concur that the Phoenix source is one piece contributing towards significant coverage) but I don't think that there is enough combining that with the current sources to meet WP:GNG at all. The other keep votes are "this article is too new to be deleted" which is not policy based and does not discuss the main point that there's not enough coverage at least imv, and "hundreds of sports stars have an article" which falls as an argument immediately under WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. ser! - Keep Nominator for this deletion quotes WP:POLITICIAN to delete this article but per aforesaid guidelines, politicians who have held office[1] or received significant press coverage (as politician[2][3] / business head[4]) are considered notable. Main article's political career section seems to fulfill this criteria.
- (if) other concerns on quality of article can however be raised on main article page and improvements invited, this should not warrant a deletion though Nisingh.8 (talk) 18:07, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

- Delete per WP:POLOUTCOMES. We have deleted, in the past 10 years, thousands of articles about diplomats, political party officials, losing candidates, and activists, up to and including candidates for the United States Senate, for lack of significant coverage. Only members of parliament or the equivalent are automatically included here: not political party officials. It’s about as strong a consensus as you can imagine on Wikipedia. If you haven’t ever read Wikipedia, you might not know that, but that’s not our problem, because in 2024 everybody knows that. We are not Ballotpedia or Truth Social. - Keep. While normally this politician would be deleted under WP:NPOL, there is international coverage of this particular politician's arrest and imprisonment. This clearly puts this particular person beyond the normal scope of someone in this type of post. Passes WP:SIGCOV.4meter4 (talk) 15:12, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Final relist. I'm not terribly convinced by either "side". Looks like he doesn't meet WP:NPOL and the election that might qualify him for NPOL is unlikely to happen in the next six months: point for the deleters. But the deleters haven't really countered the keepers' assertions that there are enough sources for WP:GNG. So, which is it?
