for not adding talk page tags? (projects) not a big deal either way, just wondering... JarrahTree 12:27, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure what you are referring to.--User:Namiba 12:56, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A large number of the categories and articles that you create have red links for the talk page - however the usual approach to the material is to have projects added -

from my experience of research re labour history in western australia - I have added items relevant: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Industrial_Workers_of_the_World_in_Australia it might not fit all items, just the unique circumstances of that subject.

in a lot of circumstance it is much simpler - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Industrial_Workers_of_the_World_in_Canada JarrahTree 13:06, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't tend to add tags. Others will add them if they want to do so. Everyone has different editing habits.--User:Namiba 13:08, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed - thank you so much for your reply - that's fine - there are often many corners of wikipedia where no one is the slightest interested. But thank you very much for your main space additions about organised labour - very thorough, and thank you JarrahTree 13:18, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Crystal Dangerfield

[edit]

Hi, Namiba. Do you have any interest in working on Crystal Dangerfield for DYK? I have about four days left to expand it fivefold, and it's already approximately that long. Thank you for starting this article! I am just a fan. - (talk) 02:02, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SusanLesch, the article looks great. You've done a lot of work to improve it from the stub I created. I don't have the time to work on it myself but I appreciate the work you've done. One small thing: a few of the points in the personal life section (like her favorite movie etc) seem trivial. Not sure if they should be included in an encyclopedia article.--User:Namiba 02:54, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you again for creating this. Agreed trivia is out of place in Wikipedia. I just think it's important to show nobody is 100% their sport. Does it look better now or should I remove the sentence: spending time with...? -SusanLesch (talk) 15:38, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think the "she enjoys..." sentence is probably not necessary. Those aren't particularly unique characteristics that cannot be written about most other people.--User:Namiba 17:25, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Fixed. -SusanLesch (talk) 21:05, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

High schools

[edit]

Here is a link to US Cities notable people[1] criteria. People articles get categorized by where they were born or lived. Not gone to school. Going to school in Foo doesn't automatically make you from Foo. That has been the consensus around WP. You know why? I will give 3 examples-

Centereach High School students can come from Centereach, New York but also from Lake Grove, New York and even Selden, New York

Deerfield Beach High School students can come from Deerfield Beach, Florida, but also from Lighthouse Point, Florida, Hillsboro Beach, Florida, Coral Springs, Florida, and Parkland, Florida.

Lake Worth High School students can come from Lake Worth, Florida, but also from Atlantis, Florida, Lantana, Florida

and on and on and on....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 16:19, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I want to extend my thanks for all of your work, especially when there are people who make edits like this out of what appears to be malice. It's a shame that there are people here trying to build an encyclopedia and others who work so hard to destroy it. Sportsperson RfC

[edit]

Hi, I've withdrawn the CfD for now. I proposed discussing things on the talk page first not because the RfC should be here, but to see if we can agree on how to pose the RfC question. SportingFlyer T·C 14:46, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you work on a question and I will respond to it?--User:Namiba 16:03, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Will try to post it here tomorrow. SportingFlyer T·C 16:06, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Here's my proposed wording for the RfC. If it looks good to you I'll set it up. SportingFlyer T·C 14:07, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed RfC

[edit]

This RfC is to get consensus on clarification for WP:OCLOCATION in a very specific topic area: sports.

Dating back to the origin of WP:OCLOCATION, CfDs have consistently held that sportspeople should be categorised under two different directory structures: Basketball player by country/state, and Sportspeople by City: here and here (which has links to seven other previous CfDs). For an example of a sportsperson who is categorised in this way, see Luka Modrić.

In 2007, Dugwiki wrote this essay explaining the reasoning behind WP:OCLOCATION, which noted Do not replace national categories with state ones or city ones within an article because not all states and cities have occupational groupings. For example, a California writer should be under both Category:American writers (or a subcategory) and Category:California writers. Keep in mind that the goal here isn't to subdivide the occupation, but is simply to subdivide the geographical area. The project has operated under these guidelines for at least 13 years.

Recently, but mostly this year, many sub-categories have been created in the Category:Sportspeople by city or town category against the existing consensus. For instance, all three categories in Category:Curlers by city or town were created in 2020, as was Category:Canoeists by city or town, Category:Fencers by city or town, and many others.

Furthermore, in the last month, two WP:OCLOCATION CfDs have closed as no consensus: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_December_1#Basketball_players_by_city_or_town_in_the_United_States and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_November_15#Category:Basketball_players_from_Shkodër.

This has created a situation where consensus might be changing, but if it's not changing, cleanup efforts will be needed because of the recent proliferation of these categories. This RfC has been created to determine centralised consensus in order to provide clarity and avoid future conflict. The three options follow below:

  • Option A: Maintain the status quo and continue categorising sportspeople by their sport and country/state of origin, and then "Sportspeople from X" for city.
  • Option B: Maintain the status quo but allow exceptions for specific large cities which may be defining, such as Category:Basketball players from New York City (possibly as non-diffusing categories.)
  • Option C: Change the status quo and allow players to be diffused by intersection of sport and city.

There is also a separate issue which has been identified where some players have been categorised into multiple locations, such as Stuart Pearce being "from" three different parts of London. That is beyond the scope of this discussion, but a follow-up conversation may be needed depending on this RfC's result. SportingFlyer T·C 14:07, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for writing this question, but I disagree with framing it as a clear change in consensus. There are numerous examples of similar categories existing for years with no issue. The issues has been that certain editors have opposed it for US categories while categories around the world are undisputed. I would rather frame it as an up or down with prejudicing the question of an existing consensus. As the most recent CFDs have shown, there is no present consensus. Moreover, WP:OCLOCATION allows for spliting large categories by location, which is the issue at hand. I would be happy to clarify that small categories should not be split by profession but large ones (say ones containing over 20 entries) can be split.--
I don't think that's a correct assessment. I've gone through most of the categories in that list and most of them were created in 2019 or 2020. I wouldn't call them undisputed. The ones I saw that weren't were rugby league or cricket. SportingFlyer T·C 15:06, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Basketball players from Greater London was created in 2015. Category:Boxers from Greater London (2017). Category:Footballers from Medellín (2017). Category:Association footballers from Auckland (2016). Those are just a random assortment of said categories and none are rugby league or cricket. As I said, opposition to these categories has been almost unanimously focused on preventing their growth among US sportspeople.--User:Namiba 20:15, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine - the majority of these have been created this year, and "Golfers from Leeds" (linked above) wasn't US-focused. Are you opposed if I nominate non-US categories at CfD instead of running the RfC? SportingFlyer T·C 17:47, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am opposed to nominating them for deletion in general. I think most of them are useful categories supported by policy. I would support a higher standard than the consensus of 5 to avoid being considered a small category but I do not support deletion. As I said, I don't think endless CFD's are the right way to make policy.--User:Namiba 18:33, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What would you propose as a way forward? SportingFlyer T·C 15:10, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think that this issue goes far beyond sportspeople categories. For example, there are 82 subcategories of Category:Military personnel by city, 16 subcategories at Category:American physicians by city, 124 subcategories of Category:Scientists by country and city, and 89 subcategories of Category:Architects by city to name just a few similar trees. I think it would be better to rewrite the policy to recognize that such categories should exist (when they contain a certain number of entries) rather than try to delete hundreds or even thousands of such categories.--User:Namiba 18:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Basketball Players from Philadelphia category

[edit]

Do you think I should make a category of basketball players from philadelphia? I'm afraid the category is going get sent to CFD briskly. I believe that this should be a category for the same reason why Category:Basketball players from Los Angeles was created, due to it's rich basketbal culture and history dating back to the early days of the NBA with Wilt Chamberlain. Please feel free to leave your thoughts on the propose category. ₛₒₘₑBₒdyₐₙyBₒdy₀₅ (talk) 16:30, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is warranted on multiple levels. On top of the reasons you describe above, Category:Sportspeople from Philadelphia is overpopulated. However, it will probably be nominated for deletion at the present moment. As you can see from the above thread, there will likely be an RFC on such categories in the near future. If you do create it, I would suggest having the sources prepared to demonstrate how it is a unique topic in its own right.--User:Namiba 18:44, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Oyabe, Gabon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This is an unsourced stub that is no better than a WP:DICDEF. Despite looking for this place both on and off-line (in the Times Atlas of the World) I can find no evidence that the place actually exists. The given coordinates are in the middle of wilderness, not near any roads or other communications, and no evidence of any settlement is visible

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi, are you sure "Farmingham, Maine" is "Farmington, Maine"? I thought the same at first, but then I found "Farmingham road, Littleton, Maine" around 46°12'38.2"N 67°48'28.5"W no were near Farmington, so I think it may be not renamed, but just gone. All I could find was postcards of the place and a few mentions in the old newspapers. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 14:45, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I'm so blind, that's "Framingham Rd" not "Farmingham Rd"! KylieTastic (talk) 14:48, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am fairly certain it is referring to Farmington, Maine but I've emailed the Farmington Public Library to confirm if that is a former or incorrect name of the town. I will change it back to Farmingham if I am unable to confirm.--User:Namiba 15:13, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yup I think your right. This Postcard labelled "Farmingham" on the page actually has Farmington written on it, also I found an old book referencing "Sandy River Framingham" which would also collaborate it is just an old use or probbably just a misspelling of Farmington that got copied about a bit. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:38, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request to view two cited sources in your Benjamin Bubar article.

[edit]

Hello Namiba, my name is José and I'm working on a project in collaboration with members of the Rockland, Maine Historical Society about the Klan's presence in the Midcoast and more broadly Maine throughout history.

In scouring through issues of Rockland's Courier Gazette (which I had digitized a few decades of as a pretty sweet high school job), I noticed Bubar's name associated with some Klan figures of the time, and came across the article.

In particular, I am interested in the citation from the 1935 "Biographical Sketches of Members of Senate and House of Representatives of Maine" noting his connection to Billy Sunday as well as the article in the BDN noting his Klan connections. I was unable to find the Biographical Sketches in particular archived anywhere digitally, so I'm hoping if you have a physical copy, could you potentially photograph/scan the section about Bubar. Additionally, a screenshot/clipping of the article describing Bubar's gubernatorial run in 1934 and Klan connections would be very helpful.

if you want to reach me, the best way is via email. My address is [email protected], if you're at all interested in the project I'm working on, then feel free to ask any questions! In viewing your page (still getting used to navigating this side of Wikipedia, although my heart tells me I need to start editing of course) I've also noticed an interest in the labor history of Maine, and this is another aspect I'm hoping to find more resources on.

Thank you,

José

Hi Jose, I would prefer not to email you privately, but an amazing resource for basic information on any state legislator is the Maine State Legislative Library, which can be reached at [email protected]. The reference librarian sent me what they have on Bubar as part of my research for the article. Regarding his connection to the Klan, I found letters from Bubar to his wife on Klan letterhead in the Bubar archive in special collections at the Fogler Library. I suggest signing up for a free trial for newspapers.com in order to look at the article in the citation. You can also look it up at any library with microfilm for the Bangor Daily News (like the Maine State Library, Fogler Library, and more).--User:Namiba 19:59, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My response for the creation of Category:Politicians from Fredericton

[edit]

Hi Namiba, I thank you for creating the category entitled Category:Politicians from Fredericton as my response. I was reacting when I saw Category:Politicians from Fredericton and you replace from Category:People from Fredericton into Category:Politicians from Fredericton. When you're offline from changing categories. I was getting ready to have a chance for some editing assistance by myself because why, I change from "People from Fredericton" into "Politicians from Fredericton" by myself. So if you can thank me for editing assistance by changing the category into Category:Politicians from Fredericton that would be great. I change it two days ago and yesterday. I hope you will respond by thanking me for some editing assistance by changing to Category:Politicians from Fredericton. So thanks for the message I hope you will respond by thanking me by changing to "Politicians from Fredericton" two days ago and yesterday. Second round picks

[edit]

Understood. Though I wasn't really changing the team parameter for many articles -- Preston may have been the only one. I was more focused on adding draft details rather than quibbling over something like this. Though it can be argued that these players will represent their NBA franchise in the Summer League, I honestly don't feel particularly strong about this issue. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 02:03, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see you proposed this article for deletion. It seems notable to me, and cites many sources. I think it is a nice little article about a troubled agency. In any case, usually the tag for proposed deletion points toward a discussion where we might vote Keep or Delete. Is such a process going for this article? If so, where is it? Notice

The article Julie Jacobson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:NPOL and WP:GNG. A WP:BEFORE search on multiple search engines produced no WP:RS-compliant sourcing that contained significant coverage of the subject.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your opinion. But the close was based off of the discussion.
The contents of that category were merged to Category:American people of Italian descent - jc37 05:24, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Where were the arguments which specifically said that this category should be deleted?--User:Namiba 18:05, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, treating this as a request for clarification.
This was a group nomination. The main result was Merge/Delete most. A primary argument from several (including you) was WP:OCEGRS.
Based upon the discussion, it was clear that there was no consensus to merge "American gangsters of X descent". And that more discussion was needed concerning wrestlers and writers/poets. But there was no support for keeping any of the rest per OCEGRS.
I hope this helps clarify. - jc37 11:23, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"There was no support for keeping any of the rest per OCEGRS" except from myself and two other editors. Sources were provided which demonstrated why it is a unique subtopic and thus fails OCEGRS. I request that you re-read the discussion and pay closer attention to the arguments re: trade unionists.--User:Namiba 16:11, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have looked at it again. And of course consensus is not a vote. A closer closes a discussion based upon the discussion and strength of arguments based upon current policy/process/practice. In particular noted in the discussion were Wikipedia:Categorization of people (Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality) and WP:OCEGRS, and how those apply to the categories in question. Also discussed (including by the nominator) was the concern about triple intersection (nationality, heritage, and occupation), etc.
All that said, if you wish to relist the trade unionists one (Category:American trade unionists of Italian descent) for a new discussion, I'm not opposed to that.
If the relist results in "keep", it should be easy enough to ask the bot owner to restore at that point. - jc37 17:03, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please relist this category, jc37.--User:Namiba 18:08, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Buildings and structures Massachusetts

[edit]

I missed the discussion on whether to put houses under buildings and structures. I probably would have voted for the reason given. However there is a logical problem with the category, which has always bothered me. A house is a building and is also a structure. These terms don't distinguish anything. The way out in English is to use "other:" buildings and other structures, houses and other buildings, etc. If you felt it was worth while you could change some category names to be logically correct. No need to answer. Sorry I missed the vote.Botteville (talk) 19:39, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Masonic buildings

[edit]

Please do not remove Category:Masonic buildings for no apparent reason, as u did for 2 in Pakistan? Why??? What are you thinking??? Did u remove it anywhere else?

For these 2 i created new Category:Masonic buildings in Pakistan, which you could have done. But they were fine where they were, did not need to be broken out further.

Are you experienced or new, and should u be blocked from using hotcat, i wonder. --Doncram (talk, contribs) 21:48, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:Doncram, these articles were already in Category:Masonic buildings completed in YEAR. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with how categories work before making such bad faith assumptions on my talk page.--User:Namiba 15:36, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is a hierarchy of categories of Masonic buildings by place, ie by country then in some countries by state or province. With some items in the top one, because it hadn't yet seemed necessary to create a country category for just one or two items. From which you removed those two.
Again, did you do that for any others? If so, could u please undo those edits, or need i go investigating your edit history further?
I am not an administrator, i am just an editor trying to develop good coverage of historic places and buildings. Occasionally encountering newish editors doing minor harm. It is a pretty basic thing for a wannabe categorizer to check: are there relevant subcategories into which an item should be placed, before u go removing it from a high level category. The fact u are not admitting error is not a good look, in my meeting u for the first time.

It's not convenient on my current device, so I haven't yet reviewed your edits before i posted here. But i see that AFTER i posted here and asked you not to, you have gone on to do the same thing, for Victoria Masonic Temple and Plaridel Masonic Temple, at least. What gives. Can you please undo those and identify and fix any others.
Look, editors make mistakes. I make lots of mistakes, but i admit i have, apologize, and fix them...and learn...if someone has taken time to explain something to me nicely, and the same if they have been a bit abrupt. Because others being abrupt to you happens also, for whatever reason on their end, and that is a pretty good indicator they know stuff you don't. --Doncram (talk, contribs) 21:58, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Based on your approach to this, I have nothing further to say to you so please stop writing me.--User:Namiba 23:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1971-72 Namibian contract workers strike updated

[edit]

Hi! I've updated and worked on the content for 1971-72 Namibian contract workers strike that you established. If you could give it a look over when you have the time I would greatly appreciate it. If not that's perfectly fine. I just thought I'd ask since it's somewhat out of my area of expertise, and you've created many different articles in relation to Namibia when I checked your creations page. Thanks! LoomCreek (talk) 22:08, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LoomCreek, really outstanding work you've done with this article. I will take a closer look at it soon.--User:Namiba 23:05, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I am a somewhat blind to small grammatical errors when it comes to first revisions. So I'll try to go over it with a fine comb tooth over the next few days to catch those.
Also I'm not really familiar with the conventions of the South African English dialect. So those correction and changes are very much appreciated. LoomCreek (talk) 23:28, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As an update, there actually also seems to be a small short section on the strike on the South African Border War Page:
South African Border War#Political unrest in Ovamboland
Which provides a whole group of new sources to potentially use, particularly the later events of the strike. LoomCreek (talk) 06:30, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is great news! I would suggest expanding the introduction to provide a more thorough summary of the strike and the results. I started doing this in my most recent edits.--User:Namiba 13:09, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice! I'll try to expand summary and results over the next few weeks. LoomCreek (talk) 16:03, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Emigrants from Canada pre-1867

[edit]

First off I think we need to choose names that describe such things better than saying thry happened before some even. I think we need to scrap the pre-confederation name. From an actual political perspective from 1841-1867 the main settled areas of Quebec and Ontario were the United Province of Canada so we maybe should have emigrants from the United province of Canada for people in that time frame, and then add Upper Canada and Lower Canada for earlier. I am not sure we have enough people emigrating from Rupert's Land or other areas in the west of British North America. I also wonder if a general Category:Emigrants from British North America might work. I know in common usage the United Province of Canada was referred to as Canada East and Canada West, but it was one political entity with one government. I am thinking we at most would need New Brusnwick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Isaland, United Province of Canada, Upper Canada, Lower Canada and Newfoundland cats. Newfoundland is first a colony and then a dominion. The fact that is exists for 82 years outside the Dominion of Canada makes things interesting. You can thus have emigrants from Newfoundland to Canada

Some of this goes to the tricky issue of how to avoid emigration categories, which are by nationslity, including people who are descrbed with the same terms but not to describe nationslity. The extreme we have at present is there is an Assyrian emigrants tree. The problem is not one of these people was an emigrant who was a national of Assyria. These are 20th century people of Assyrian ethnicity who left states in south-west Asia to move to most often states in Europe. I think we may have an Assyrian emigrants to Sweden cat. Emigrants should not be categorized by ethnicity, but by the country thry are nationals or subjects or citizens of. They may in a few cases have never been present in the country thry are citizens of, but thry need yo be citizens of it. For example a man of Chinese descent born in San Francisco, California who moves to Sao Paulo, Brazil is an American emigrant to Brazil, even if he never spoke a word of English in his life. However the child of a Chinese diplomat born and raised in Washington DC, learning English from his African-American nannies but never claiming American status, who moved yo Brazil and takes citizenship there, who has never set foot in China is a Chinese emigrant to Brazil. Sorry if this is so long, it is very refreshing to see an attempt to bring some of these emigration categories related to Canada yo have much better names.

More thoughts on British North America

[edit]

on further review I think we want an Emigrants from British North America. We have an article British North America that makes the scope clear. I think we want to include people leaving anywhere from the British North America until those places stop being such. In Newfoundland this is to 1907 when it becomes its own Dominion. In what we're the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick it is 1867. In Prince Edward Island it is 1873, and there are a few other years.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:33, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your thoughts. I think Category:Emigrants from British North America to the United States would make the most sense, especially if we also are attuned to including them in their provincial or colonial category.--User:Namiba 13:02, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tennis people

[edit]

Why did you create "Tennis coaches from California"? It is redundant given that Category:American tennis coaches exists. I explained before that merging the categories is the first step to bring some organization and I feel as though (and I hope I am wrong) that you are undermining what I am trying to do.

For one, if you categorize coaches, there will be very few per state. Please try and understand and delete the category as the author. Thank you. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:35, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Given that you were able to create only two Categories for coaches, you realize there is no point in categorizing them.
You want to keep categories which serve no purpose. Please just cooperate with me on this one. It will be appreciated. Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:43, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've only begun to populate the American tennis coaches by state categories. There are many coaches of sport X by state, see Category:Coaches of American football by state for specific examples and Category:American sports coaches by state for the broader context. You are very enthusiastic about categorization but your comments indicate that you don't seem to understand the finer points of the process. I suggest familiarizing yourself with the main policies before editing further.--User:Namiba 13:49, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know. I have read it. Unsurprisingly, only team-sports coaches have 50 categories each, not single-player sports like tennis which have only. Hence why making these categories you are creating, despite my telling you not to, redundant. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:08, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Where in those guidelines does it discuss the distinction between team sports versus single sports? There is a really handy tool I suggest you familiarize yourself with which can eliminate many problems https://petscan.wmflabs.org/ It allows you to see how many articles intersect two categories, thus allowing you to see which categories would be reasonably sized and which would not if created. If you look at American tennis coaches and sportspeople from California, you will see that there are dozens of articles which can reasonably be placed in Category:Tennis coaches from California. As you know, a category with 34 articles can hardly be called redundant.--User:Namiba 14:11, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What I am trying to say is that this is my project. I started it. I created the tennis player categorization. I feel that I know more about tennis to do this. It is why I am asking you to stop. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:41, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Again I would ask you to reverse your vote in the Cfd. There is no point in having tennis people categories for every state. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While I appreciate your enthusiasm here, what you're saying is that you WP:OWN this and that is not acceptable. I have heard your thoughts and ask that you move along and refrain from commenting on my talk page about this further. Thank you.--User:Namiba 15:39, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will say one last thing: the least you could have done is wait for the Cfd discussion to close. Omnis Scientia (talk) 15:46, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would also advise to tell you to NOT remove pages from Category:American tennis coaches. Omnis Scientia (talk) 15:39, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is clear that you took this the wrong way so please allow me to explain: the reason why I told you to delete ONE category with TWO pages in it (as it was at the time I messaged you here) is because I felt you were acting prematurely. I STILL think you should have waited for the discussion to close before you made the categories but it is your right to do what you want.
And to make it clear, I don't feel like I own the categories. I'm sorry if I seemed to imply that, that was not my intention. Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:40, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Omnis Scientia, thanks for apology. It's all good, no hard feelings.--User:Namiba 01:55, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I referred to the articles in that category, as there were multiple fiction works that took liberties to take details from the real cases to write them into their stories. It’s not too big a deal that you’ve deleted the category, but may you at least place a list of the articles formerly in that category on my page? It would help me in the future so I don’t forget which cases were there and what similarities I may remember they had to certain fiction works. Kindly reply on my page so I get the notification. Irresponsible categorization by ethnicity

[edit]

I just had someone justify placing someone in an ethnicity category by saying "we can tell the person's ethnicity by looking at their picture." While their overall reason for this particular case is a little more justified (it also relies at looking at what college they went to), the fact that an editor would say such a thing I find disturbing. I am also sure people have done it with even less justification. In fact I think at one point we had some ethnicity and descend cats based solely on looking at pictures. We also had some descent categorization based on saying "this last name is of x ethnic origin, thererfore anyone who has it has ancestors from x". I guess Columba Bush is of English descent. OK, people normally do not assume based on married names, but I am sure an editor somewhere has.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:03, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an experienced editor, but do see a number of errors in the WIKI page about the Prohibition Party. The party color is not PINK, the flag shown was never a party flag (reading the actual book referenced proves that the flag was the flag of the WCTU and not of the Prohibition Party. There are other errors as well. The image of Michael Wood is from the official party website. I am not sure how to get these changes made... am hoping for your support. Mistaken interpretation of Category:American politicians who are the sole member of their party in statewide office

[edit]

Hello,

Your vote on this deletion entry reflects a totally inaccurate reading of the category's title. It is not arguing that Susan Collins is the only Republican ever elected to statewide office, but is stating the objective fact that she is currently the only Republican in statewide office. Please change your vote to reflect the actual meaning of the category. Thank you. 1Matt20 (talk) 19:04, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging categories for speedy deletion

[edit]

Hello, Namiba,

Please be careful when placing a CSD tag on a category that is being deleted due to a CFD closure. We need the deletion rationale/summary to have a link to the CFD discussion and not say that the category is being deleted due to other speedy deletion criteria. Maybe try putting the CSD tag UNDER the CFD notice would help. We typically use Twinkle to delete pages and it is picking up the CSD reason, not the link to the CFD discussion. If you have questions, ask Marco or Mason or one of the other CFD regulars. Right now, I'm just reverting your edit and then deleting the category but there must be a simpler way to delete categories that are part of a CFD closure. Thank you. Liz Read! People from categories for students and burials

[edit]

As in this edit, individuals who belong in Category:Hackensack High School alumni are not necessarily from Hackensack and do not belong in Category:People from Hackensack, New Jersey. The school currently serves students from Rochelle Park and South Hackensack, and in the past has served residents of several other municipalities. And as I undid in this edit, people who are buried in Hackensack Cemetery are not people from Hackensack; they may never have stepped foot in Hackensack during their lifetime. This is equally true for most other schools and is absolutely true for all other cemeteries. Alansohn (talk) 16:14, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Having your permanent resting place be in a specific location does make someone FROM that location. They have a long-lasting and permanent connection to the place, in at least death if not life.--User:Namiba 16:40, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to USL W League

[edit]

You made a change to USL W League and after making the change asked a question in your edit summary. This probably should have been brought up on the talk page and discussed. If you look at the reference for the lead section, USL W League self defines as a pre-professional league. I agree that this is likely amateur, but making that assumption likely fall under original research, so I think using the reference to define what is in the article is a good approach. Reverts on BLP/Counterpunch is on the redlist/over-categorising

[edit]

Re: Cheri Honkala, Counterpunch is also a poor quality source. I have no problem with you including the information, but it must have a proper source first. This is a BLP article so we have to follow best practice. Please don't re-add poorly sourced info. I would prefer for this not to require escalation. As I say, I'm not invested in the subject being ultimately categorised or not, so long as the sourcing for this is strong. Lewisguile (talk) 19:13, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since you are now reverting me on multiple pages, I will have to insist you follow best practice for BLPs and categories. Categories must be defining, which means they are something that RSes "commonly, consistently" use about the subject. If RSes commonly refer to the subject in this way, then please add them to the article first. BLPs shouldn't have anything poorly sourced, whether positive, negative or neutral. There have been arbitration decisions considering this very issue recently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement#c-ScottishFinnishRadish-20241115132000-Bohemian_Baltimore. Blanket adding of contentious categories is likely to be seen as failing WP:NPOV and the WP:ONUS is on the editor who adds the text. The fact the recent CfD has 14 for deletion and 10 for keep is evidence that this is a highly sensitive topic area, so it deserves due care . Categories also become worthless if they're used too often.
