Constructive Activation Experiments

This year, the Growth team is exploring ways to help more new account holders start editing—and do so constructively, meaning their edits are not reverted. Our latest experiments include:

Gradual rollout of "Add a Link" at English Wikipedia – We are gradually introducing the "Add a Link" structured task to newcomers at English Wikipedia (T386029). This serves as a natural A/B test to measure its impact on activation, retention, and revert rates (T382603). Previous experiments on pilot wikis showed that "Add a Link" increases newcomer participation, particularly by helping them make constructive (non-reverted) edits.
Testing in-article suggestions for first-time editors – Many new account holders want to contribute but don’t know where to start. To help, we’re piloting a feature that surfaces structured task suggestions directly in an article’s read view for brand-new editors (T385343). These suggestions will appear for logged-in users with no edits, providing a clear, simple way to begin contributing that is surfaced while they read.

Community Updates

Newcomers often struggle to find their place in Wikipedia’s collaborative environment. While experienced editors easily discover events like edit-a-thons and writing campaigns, newcomers often miss out.

To bridge this gap, we launched the Community Updates module for the Newcomer Homepage. This module is disabled by default, allowing Community Admins to decide how (or if) to use it.
If your community hosts events, consider setting up a Community Update to engage and welcome newcomers! Learn more on Diff. To configure, visit Special:CommunityConfiguration.

Community Configuration

Community Configuration is now available across all wikis, including non-Wikipedia projects (T383910). Community Configuration allows admins to customize various features like Growth features and Automoderator for their communities, and more recently the Babel extension now allows admins to modify configuration:

Babel customization – Admins can now configure Babel settings (T374348), including category naming, automatic category creation, and more. See an example on Wikimedia Commons.
Upcoming configurable features – Projects exploring community configuration options include: Incident Reporting System (T374113) and Cite backlinks (T378807).

Mentorship

Mentors play a key role in guiding new editors. If you’re interested in mentoring, or turning mentorship on at your wiki, check out the Mentorship FAQ

Starting February 17, 100% of new accounts at English Wikipedia will be assigned a mentor (T384505).
At Spanish Wikipedia, on 50% of newcomers get a mentor. Experienced contributors are encouraged to join mentorship so that Spanish Wikipedia can provide a mentor to all new users.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, we will continue balancing maintenance work—such as deprecating EditGrowth Config (T367574) and migrating Statslib (T359352) — with user-facing improvements that support new editors and foster the next generation of contributors.

@Missmistay which page were you trying to edit? Some pages are restricted, due to high levels of vandalism. Others are restricted by policy, for example highly used templates, or articles on Israel and Palestine require special access levels. It's kind of frustrating dealing with all the bells and whistles of the fast plug in... I'm not sure what you call it.. things. It might be because I'm not used to it and don't know how to work around it but I prefer if I could just be allowed to type and cite where I want without a pop up. Maybe I'm just too used to academic papers it's a lot of times it feels like I cant move around things or change certain little things if I don't type it into a little thing that pops up. @JamesEMonroe I feel you! Policy wise, there is no rule requiring any citation style or even consistency, but I highly recommend it. Personally, if I see an existing article I try to use the article's existing conventions. But if you are creating an article from scratch, feel free to use your own convention. Sometimes a link does not even exist. But if it does, it helps to provide it, so others can verify the claims. But you can leave attributes blank, if it's not your favorite thing. Remote work laws

Chag Sameach! I hope all is well with you. Dutch law states that "Working from home is not a legal right. However, according to the Flexible Working Act...employees may submit a written request to work (partly) from home" and that employers "must have a good reason for refusing such a request." According to the World Economic Forum, a similar law was drafted in Germany. Do you know what became of it? Is this now codified under German law? Thank you. Chag sameach @Bohemian Baltimore, "Mobilearbeit" does not have a concrete legal definition or regulation for the most part still. In the Works Constitution Act, Section 87, Paragraph 1. Sentence 14 does newly refer to principles of mobile work being regulatable in a works agreement. So if the employer refuses mobile work for anyone, then the only possibility would be if it was guaranteed in individual labor contractors, but there's no laws mandating this. This is not to be confused with "telework" which is travelling work, for example sales-people or others who travel for work. @Shushugah Thank you for the clarification. The remote work article has a brief "Legal aspects" section that doesn't really give global coverage of laws and regulations related to remote work. I was trying to think of a name for a separate article. Remote work laws? Remote work legislation? Remote work regulations? Maybe Legal aspects of remote work? I'm not quite sure yet. Legal aspects of remote work is my favorite name as the other article titles would indicate a simple list. But all are reasonable to have as redirects either way. I'd be happy to give some of them a gloss over. @Theanthonymovement hello, every claim is attributed to a source, the quality of the sources are not very high. Several of the sources are simply the website or blog posts close to the company. The sections about capital funding, number of customers are not interesting to most people, except the company itself. Right now, the Event namespace is permitted by default for Event Registration. However, other namespaces (such as Wikipedia, WikiProject, etc) can now be added as permitted namespaces by admins too. An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.

Hey, I want to be in good faith. There's this article; Gun control, and it has soo many sources that I dont even know what to do with or how to fix the article. It feels too bulky but management didn't put up a box for it. I also would had to remove all of there hard work and so many sources, or at least summarize and condense a lot of them, it something I would be bad about and I might get nicked for unconstructive. Do you have any advice? you can look at the article yourself. Regardless of the article, I would want to know what to do for future reference.

Also with that article I'm kind of stuck. It already has a lot of sources and information on studies, so I cant add new countries to it. The sources are the bulk of the paper and there's mostly research for one-side, and it would be insanity to match what is on the supportive with the already huge amount of studies. I cant add information about specify laws or gun control because it will conflict with the purpose of gun laws of nations article where it goes into detail about what is enacted. talking about the controversy would surely get someone upset. Trying to format it into a good article would talk removing a lot of person work too. so basically there's nothing I can do. I'm also new to it so idk the consensuses, I checked the achieves and learned of things not to do but its probably not everything too. (unrelated to this article but also what do you do for editing if the admins say no consensus and locked the talk thread saying it derailed enough and ran its course)
