New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

[edit]

Hello Rangasyd,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Category:1582 in Judaism

[edit]

I have tagged Category:1582 in Judaism as empty, along with several siblings in Judaism by year, Category:1630s in Judaism and Category:1630s in Judaism, after fixing a coding error in Template:Synagogues completed in year category header and Template:Synagogues completed in decade category header. These templates were not intended to populate early dates where there was no content other than the subcat of Category:Synagogues by year of completion / by decade (before 1800 or 1700 respectively). – Fayenatic London 09:50, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please also see follow-up nomination at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2024_April_27#Judaism_by_year re year/decade categories over Jewish organizations. – Fayenatic London 10:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fayenatic london: Please tell me why the dates 1800 and 1700 have been arbitrarily selected as the dates by which categorisation by year should start; and prior to these dates, categorisation should occur only by decade. Was there some momentus event in Jewish history that I'm not aware of that has been determined by Wikipedia editors through consensus that this is the effective start date. If there is such debate, please direct me to the discussion, as I'm keen to understand the logic and reasoning behind such a decision. Or is this a classic case of WP:RECENTISM, in the context of Jewish history, where, because there is currently more recent content in Wikipedia, categorisation by year is deemed necessary? Finally, should this discussion sit on my talk page - or in a more public forum? Rangasyd (talk) 13:20, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Jewish organizations by year of establishment and Category:Synagogues by year of completion are already part of Category:Judaism by year. After 1800 there are other articles e.g. pogroms, so it's worth having e.g. Category:1806 in Judaism, but there is no point in building a structure of categories with only a single subcat each – they do not aid navigation. – Fayenatic London 07:55, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

National Park Service

[edit]

Hello, and thank you for all the great work you are doing providing references for historic sites in the U.S. I have a very small request - in fact, it's the size of one letter. The federal agency in charge of national parks in the U.S. is the National Park Service, not the National Parks Service. Could you be sure to use the word "Park", not "Parks", in your references going forward? Thanks again! Ken Gallager (talk) 13:06, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. No worries. In Australia, where I live, the equivalent agency, as a state level, is called the National Parks and Wildlife Service. So, it's a small slip of the 'pen'. I shall take more care in the future. Thanks. Rangasyd (talk) 13:13, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, I've noticed that when I do a search for "National Parks Service" every now and then. Australia, Nigeria, probably a few other countries. Fascinating. Ken Gallager (talk) 13:34, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Brownlow Hill Estate - Fanny Macleay

[edit]

Hi there

I'm working on a page for Fanny Macleay and was wondering about the source you used for your information about her on the Brownlow Hill Estate Page - was the information just from the State Heritage Register entry, or is H01489 referring to something else? Thanks Kassigrace (talk) 01:54, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This conversation is moved to Talk:Brownlow Hill Estate for ongoing maintenance and input. Please do not add any further content to this article. With thanks. Rangasyd (talk) 10:36, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Information icon Hi Rangasyd! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Winter War that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Thank you. TylerBurden (talk) 19:56, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TylerBurden Not too sure that my edit required your input, as above. But, hey, if you feel you need to sleep at night by placing such comments on user's talk pages, sleep easy. Rangasyd (talk) 01:41, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, since your edit made no sense and there was no way that it was a minor edit, if you are going to edit Wikipedia articles outside of your sandbox you should probably be ready for feedback. TylerBurden (talk) 15:10, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TylerBurden: Who said I'm not ready for feedback? A cursory review of my talk page over the last 13-14 years should provide even a novice editor, let alone rollbackers and experienced editors, with some insights as to how I react to constructive feedback and how I like to collaborate with others. It's all in the delivery of the message; not the content. Those who, like you, are not nuanced in the ability to craft feedback in a constructive manner, are dealt with appropriately. Have a nice day. Rangasyd (talk) 01:27, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was considering messaging you about this: on the one hand, to thank you for the vast majority of helpful edits and clean-up you've been doing, but on the other hand flagging some WP:OR mixed in with some of your recent edits. In particular, here you claimed that the Al-Naqah Mosque is Roman/Byzantine architecture, which is not supported by sources or the article (spolia doesn't qualify in this way, there's spolia of varying quantities in virtually everything built in the former Roman world for centuries after the end of the Roman and Byzantine empires). Similarly, Category:Byzantine mosques or Category:Byzantine architecture in Saudi Arabia should not exist, as there are no such buildings that would reasonably fit these properties or that are described as such by sources. In short, don't add these kinds of claims or categories unless the article explicitly states that the building belongs to that specific period and/or style. (In some cases, it also wouldn't hurt to hold back on adding categories if the article makes claims that are odd and not reliably sourced.) Thanks, R Prazeres (talk) 03:44, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@R Prazeres: Thanks. I was mid-way through writing to you, when the above message arrived. So, good to connect. Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia, especially your input in Islamic architecture, most especially in the Middle East. As part of a broader project, over the past year or so, I've been developing some consistency across articles relating to religious buildings, whether they be temples, churches, synagogues, or mosques. I started on mosques about a week or so ago. It's a huge project and early days for me on mosques. I appreciate your expertise, as Islamic architecture and mosques are not my strength. I take your point about Al-Naqah_Mosque. Thanks for the clarification. That aside, there should be some form of consistency in looking at the infobox, the lead, and categories, on all articles that relate to religious buildings, irrespective of religion. The lead should list the name of the building, its religion, and its location in the first sentence. Thereafter, other information relevant to the building should follow. The infobox content should be detailed, including the building's (religious) status and functional status, and then its architecture. The categories should be detailed consistently, across all religions and sub-cateogrized, when appropriate. For example, if we have Category:Byzantine church buildings and Category:Byzantine synagogues, surely we should have Category:Byzantine mosques, (etc.) as mosques were completed in that style. I'd be happy to discuss here, or elsewhere, prior to progressing further. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Cheers. Rangasyd (talk) 03:58, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response and for your very warranted efforts on this. I think there are various minor things you've mentioned and little that I disagree on, but here's some (hopefully helpful and not tedious!) feedback that comes to mind:
  • For some of the parameters in Template:Infobox religious building:
    • From what I've seen, architecture_type is meant to denote "what the building was originally designed to be (i.e. Chapel, Basilica, Cathedral)" (see template description), not the architectural style (which is what architecture_style is for). So this should just be "Mosque" (with or without bluelink) rather than linking to Islamic architecture (which is an overview of Islamic architectural styles). This looks consistent with most developed mosque articles (e.g., GA articles Al-Azhar Mosque and Al-Aqsa Mosque) and it's how I've generally seen it used in other religious building articles as well (though I'm sure there's inconsistency that needs fixing).
    • For organisational_status: it's reasonably clear from the template description and from context that this parameter refers to the institutional hierarchy of Christian churches (when used, it even links to Ecclesiastical polity). In the case of mosques, the parameter's displayed label is thus a little out of place. There's also no formal hierarchy between mosques; a mosque is just a mosque, there's rarely any further institutional classification to state beyond that, so if we use multiple parameters to just say "mosque", then it seems like unnecessary repetition to me. (Not a big deal either way, but just takes up space and distracts from more substantive info.)
      • Note: historically there was a distinction between local neighborhood mosques and more important congregational mosques, so this may be one context where that parameter could be useful, but architecture_type could be used for that purpose too.
      • The template description also suggests using the more neutral parameter "type=" for Shinto shrines (e.g., see infobox at Fushimi Inari-taisha), this might be something we could use for mosques too, if helpful.
  • For the categories:
    • The short answer is that there are no "Byzantine mosques", for historical reasons: the Byzantine Empire did not build mosques and there are no mosques built in a "Byzantine" style. Byzantine architecture generally influenced Islamic architecture (which in turn influenced other traditions in the region), but that's not the same thing and reliable references don't classify any purpose-built mosques as "Byzantine", so we would be getting into WP:OR in doing so. If there are special cases, they would naturally need to be based on WP:RS.
    • For other scenarios, like Byzantine buildings converted into mosques after Muslim conquest, there should be categories like Category:Byzantine churches converted into mosques or existing ones like Category:Mosques converted from churches in Turkey.
    • Not necessarily at play here, but there's also an underlying terminology issue that seems to cause problems sometimes in discussion of Wikipedia categories: namely that, even in architectural history, terms like "Byzantine", "Ottoman", "Mamluk", "Abbasid", etc. also refer to political and historical designations, not just (or even not primarily) stylistic classifications. (I can speak for Islamic architecture, at any rate.) They are not conceptually equivalent to terms like Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, etc. which are purely stylistic classifications with clear definitions in Western culture. Thus, "Ottoman mosque" on its own is ambiguous but would equally or most naturally mean a mosque built by the Ottoman Empire; a "Mamluk mosque" implies a mosque built by the Mamluks or under their rule; and so on. These labels are still used as shorthands for stylistic descriptions because there are generally (though not always) stylistic traits associated with each of these periods/polities, but the lines are ultimately blurry from a purely stylistic perspective.
      • Categories like Category:Mamluk architecture, Category:Fatimid architecture, and so on should still work fine in this understanding. There are entire books and articles devoted to discussing and describing "Ottoman architecture", "Mamluk architecture", "Fatimid architecture", etc., so the relevant Wikipedia articles should follow accordingly if properly sourced.
      • But if we want to categorize more special cases, like buildings built in the style of the Mamluks/Ottomans/etc but that were not actually built by them, then I'd recommend more precisely-named categories to distinguish these from the more common meaning. This would apply for things like "Neo-Mamluk" buildings in Egypt (e.g., see Mamluk architecture#Neo-Mamluk architecture), or for the neo-Ottoman mosques in Turkey and elsewhere that clearly imitate classical Ottoman mosques (I don't think this is currently described on Wikipedia but there lots of references on this, e.g. [1], [2]).
  • A very minor thing: for the lead, what I've seen most consistently for stating location is "[city], [country]". Unless relevant in context, stating provinces or regions is usually superfluous. Not something I'm personally zealous about, but this seems efficient for the first sentence.
Let me know if I can help or clarify more. R Prazeres (talk) 07:10, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for your considered response, which all makes sense. I'm a fan of numbering points, for clarity / reference.
  1. I take your point regarding Byzantine mosques, and agree with your positioning. Perhaps it was a poor example of me to highlight. When you look at Mosques by architectural design you get a better feel of why it is necessary to (sub-)categorise the architectural style of mosques beyond the very broad Islamic architecture, which could apply to each and every mosque. Hence Mamluk, Modernist, Ottoman, New Classical, etc., mosques are all worthy for inclusion in the infobox, in the same way Modernist synagogues, Ottoman synagogues, et. al. are included for synagogues, and similar categories for other religious buildings. And I agree, there is some ambiguity over time periods, e.g. Ottoman Empire and Ottoman architecture. For example, a building does not need to be built in the Ottoman Empire, or during the Ottoman Empire era, to be built in the Ottoman architectural style; and the same principles apply for Byzantine, Romanesque, etc., eras/periods/empires and religious building styles. However, the use of the [insert architectural type here] architecture, over the use of [insert historical era here] era/period, should help to remove any ambiguity over the use of these terms.
  2. Having said that, personally, I have issues with {{Infobox religious building}} in two cases:
    1. organizational_status: (In my mind), this should not be limited to the status of Christian buildings; the organazational status or type should apply for all religions. Hence, the status of a synagogue, the status of a mosque, the status (or type) of a temple, etc. In fact, further, {{Infobox religious building}} should not be used for Christian buildings. {{Infobox church}}, {{Infobox monastery}}, {{LDS Temple}}, etc., should be used for Christian religious buildings. This leaves {{Infobox religious building}} to be used exclusively for religious buildings that are not Christian religious buildings. As a consequence, their status or type is important. In the case of Islam, is it a mosque, a congregational mosque, a mausoleum, an educational institution (with a mosque), etc. In the case of Judaism, it a synagogue, a yeshiva, a Chevra Kadisha, a Chabad house, a Jewish temple, an educational institution (with a synagogue), etc. The list goes on…..
    2. architecture_type: (In my mind), this should describe the architectural purpose of the building, and not it's religious purpose. However, I'm fully aware of how the existing {{Infobox religious building}} guidelines read. I believe this is erroneous, most expecially as its layout sits under the Architecture "banner". This is critically important where a building's architectural purpose may have changed over time and may be completely different to its religious purpose. For example, a building may be architecturally designed (architecture type) as, say, a Roman temple; and then may be subsequently used as a Roman church, and thereafter may be used as as a mosque or as a synagogue. So, how is the architecture type recorded? As per the existing guidelines for {{Infobox religious building}}, it should reflect its current ecclesiastical or religious purpose, and not the purposes of its design. In my mind, that's highly erroneous and not appropriate under the Architecture "banner". The change of religious purpose should sit under status or type.
  3. I will address both of the above through discussions at Template talk:Infobox religious building and include you on those discussions. To me, architectural_style is very clear and should in no way be confused with architecture_type.
  4. I think that once discussions regarding both organisational_status and architecture_type are resolved, we can move forward on the other issues, such as lead, etc., that (in my mind) are of lessor significance.
Thanks again for your considered and constructive feedback. Rangasyd (talk) 12:29, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think we're pretty much in agreement. The only potential issues are just a matter of optimizing clarity for everyone. Final thoughts:
1. For the categories, I think there is still some confusion here but it will mostly work out fine in practice, because style and period/empire will usually coincide for historical reasons. The only two recommendations I'll repeat:
  • Avoid speculating on what the style should be if the article doesn't make that clear. It's better to leave the infobox parameter blank than to introduce WP:OR for the sake of completeness. Likewise, better to leave it under a less specific category for now than to insert a category that's incorrect and adds to confusion. (Unless of course you're willing to research it every time and add citations to WP:RS; but if you're not familiar with the topic, that seems like a lot of work for you that other interested editors might be able to do more efficiently later.)
  • E.g., in addition to the example mentioned earlier, another at a quick glance is Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue (Cairo), which I see you categorized as "Ottoman" ([3]), but there's nothing Ottoman about the building, nor do the article or the sources make that claim. (It would most likely be classified as Art Nouveau ([4], [5]), potentially Art Deco too ([6]) though a bit early for it.) The "New Classical" categorizations (mentioned in the one of the notices above) also don't seem motivated; this kind of specific claim should be supported by citations.
  • There should be additional categories for modern imitations of historical styles (neo-Ottoman, neo-Mamluk, etc), which can be subcategories of the wider style categories (Ottoman, Mamluk, etc), similar to Category:Neo-Byzantine architecture, Category:Romanesque Revival architecture, etc. That would likely address any remaining ambiguities and confusion relating to what I mentioned above. It's not urgent though, we could create these subcategories later if easier.
2. For the infobox, I don't see any real problem with your points. I was describing how I've seen the current parameters applied, but if we can revise the template or its instructions to make it more useful and clear for everybody, I think that's a win.
If at all helpful, feel free to ping me in the future if I can help with any particular topic. Occasionally I might be unfamiliar, but I'll be happy to help if I know of it. Cheers, R Prazeres (talk) 17:15, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. I agree with everything that you've suggested above. If I've inadvertently used WP:OR to add categories, please correct. And I agree wholeheartedly regarding adding categories for Neo-Ottoman architecture, Neo-Mamluk architecture, et. al. I guess the first step in that is to actually define the style and the time period. Are you well places to do that? I've established Category:Neo-Mudéjar architecture, based on the already established article on Neo-Mudéjar. Thanks so much for your kind offer for help. I'll let you know if and when I come across challenges that require some of your expertise. Cheers. Rangasyd (talk) 01:11, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. There's a very brief summary of Neo-Mamluk architecture at Mamluk architecture#Neo-Mamluk architecture, but I'll see if I have time to start a separate article about it with a bit more detail. I've been meaning to add a paragraph or more about neo-Ottoman mosques at Architecture of Turkey (it's not strictly limited to Turkey, but most of the examples and references I know of relate to Turkey), but not sure when I'll have time to do so. Maybe a brief subsection at Ottoman architecture wouldn't hurt either. R Prazeres (talk) 04:52, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I just went ahead and created Neo-Mamluk architecture. R Prazeres (talk) 08:10, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
