Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

A tag has been placed on Category:1912 disestablishments in the Dutch Empire indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 22:57, 16 January 2025 (UTC)

Speedy close
[edit]Would you be willing to do a speedy close here? With so many category pages tagged, more and more people keep commenting while it does not change the outcome of the discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:55, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
- Although WP:SNOW explains the non-policy thinking which would allow an early close, I don't see that the discussion is doing any harm. The precedent CFD called for a more general discussion, and this one does seem to be airing relevant arguments constructively. – Fayenatic London 13:24, 6 February 2025 (UTC)

Infobox-breaking edits
[edit]Hello. Just to flag up that edits like this one (changing the links to articles on parties) have broken the infoboxes in multiple articles as well as removing the colours from results tables and elsewhere. The infobox relies on looking up the link title in the political party module series to pick up the shortname and colour. By changing the link but not updating the module, the infobox displays the link (e.g. 'National Unity Party (Timor-Leste)') instead of the shortname ('PUN'). Could you sort this out by updating the party names in the modules (you'll need to keep both the East Timor and Timor-Leste versions because there are still links using East Timor and deleting that from the module will result in a similar result. Cheers, Number 57 18:29, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- PS, in case you don't know, the modules are at (e.g.) Module:Political party/N. Number 57 18:29, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- I do apologise, I was working through the list of essential moves that had been prioritised at Template_talk:Asia_topic#Template-protected_edit_request_on_25_December_2024. I took care not to change the parameters within specific colour templates for parties, but did not notice the loss of colours in the infoboxes. Can the infobox templates be improved to show warnings on Preview for such changes (like other infobox warnings), notifying editors of what else needs updating?
- I've updated the lists in the templates now, and the colours are now populated in the Elections articles, where they were populated before.
- Millennium Democratic Party (Timor-Leste) had no entry; /M has only Millennium Democratic Party, but that's a redirect to a Korean party, even though the entry is in the second (main) list rather than the first (alternate names). Should that entry in /M be moved to Democratic Party (South Korea, 2000), which does not have an entry in the /D page? or updated to the Timor-Leste party? – Fayenatic London 20:20, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- Many thanks for sorting it out. I don't think it would be possible to add such a warning, and also not sure it would be a good idea as in some cases (such as parties that only contest one election – like the Millenium Democratic Party) the shortname and colour are manually added to the infobox rather than to the modules.
- Re the South Korean example given above, it should be kept in the M module for two reasons; (a) if it is moved, it would lead to infoboxes prior to the party's rename showing the Democratic Party name instead of Millennium Democratic name, and (b) the party may have changed its colours when it was renamed, and redirecting the M to the D will mean that the current colours show rather than the ones used at the time.
- It is likely that there was no entry in the module for the East Timorese MDP because it never appeared in an infobox (so a shortname was never needed) and no-one had worked out what colour the party should have associated with it.
- Hope that all makes sense... Cheers, Number 57 20:30, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. The party did contest other elections, but as a bloc member.
- Note that I updated both /L and /D pages re Liberal Party (East Timor) becoming Democratic Liberal Party (Timor-Leste) – please would you check these edits? – Fayenatic London 21:43, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- All seems to be fixed now :) Number 57 22:25, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
