Timeline History
1873 - Emily Price is born in Baltimore, Maryland to Josephine and famous architect Bruce Price.
1878 - The Price family moves to New York. They spend the winters in a brownstone on 10th Street and summers in Bar Harbor, Maine, or Tuxedo Park, New York.
1890 - Emily marries Edwin Post at Tuxedo Park, which was built by Bruce Price. She later has two sons, Edwin and Bruce.
1904 - Emilyâs first novel, âFlight of the Mothâ is published by Dodd, Mead & Company.
1916 - Emily writes âBy Motor to the Golden Gate,â hilarious accounts of her cross-country journey with her son Edwin and friend. âThe Title Market,â Emilyâs first best-seller is published.
July 1922 - âEtiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage,â by Emily Price Post is published by Funk & Wagnalls.
1923 - Emily purchases a home on Marthaâs Vineyard, a home where she would eventually retire and host her grandson during the summer months. Her four great-grandchildren vacation in Edgartown to this day.
1925 - Seeking Information on the wording and style of an engraved initiation, Emily Post visits Tiffanyâs and queries the head
of the stationery department. The gentleman replies that he would be happy to look it up for the madam, reaches under the counter and brings out âEtiquette.â
1928 - Emily anonymously writes âHow to Behave Through a Debutante,â an amusing and satirical look at the dayâs âflaming youthâ which runs serially in Vanity Fair. No one guesses that the book has been written by Emily and several reviewers think that the series is a spoof of âEtiquetteâ and its author.
1929 - Emily begins her next career as a radio personality. Sponsored by general electric, her radio program was so
popular and successful, FDR says what the greatest compliment he received when he started his fireside chats was. âYouâre as good as Emily Post!â
1940 - Emilyâs syndicated newspaper column âSocial Problemsâ appears in 150 newspapers across the country. She receives more than 5,000 letters a week.
1944 - Emilyâs grandson William marries Elizabeth Ann Lindley.
1945 - USO clubs worldwide report as many as 16,000 requests a week for âEtiquette,â second only to the Rand McNally atlas. The Chicago Daily News reports that âwhile Betty Grable is the Armyâs No. 1 pin-up girl, Emily Post is their No. 1 look-up girl.â
1946 - Twenty-four years after it first appeared, sales of âEtiquetteâ soar to a new high or 5,600 copies per week. The book
has been reprinted 65 times. Emily founds the Emily Post Institute.
1960 - Emily Post dies at the age of 86 in her Manhattan apartment. Life Magazine says. âthe world has lost its best known
arbiter of good conduct.â âEtiquette,â is in the midst of its 89th printing.
1961 - Emilyâs son Edwin writes, âTruly Emily Post,â a biography of his mother

1965 - Elizabeth Lindley Post, Emilyâs granddaughter-in-law, becomes spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute and writes the 11th edition of âEtiquette.â She goes on to revise the book four more times between 1965-1992.
1975 - The 13th edition of âEtiquetteâ is published. The Los Angeles Times reports, âThis is the first Post book to deal with premarital sex and womenâs liberation. There are many things in this new edition that have never been considered etiquette before.â Elizabeth writes âPlease, Say Please,â a guise to etiquette for children. Elizabeth and her husband Bill co-host a radio program on WNYC entitled âDo The Right Thing.â Elizabethâs syndicated column of thesame name is appearing in more than 100 newspapers.
1979 - Elizabethâs son Allen marries Peggy Grayson. The wedding takes place on Marthaâs Vineyard and the reception is held at Emilyâs summer home.
1982 - Elizabethâs books, âEmily Postâs Complete Book of Wedding Etiquetteâ and âEmily Postâs Wedding Plannerâ are published by Harper & Row.
1983 - Emily Post Summer Camp is launched in Palm Beach, Florida, held at the five-star Breakers Hotel. The camp teaches manners to young children.
1991 - Elizabeth Writes âEmily Post on second Weddings.â
1992 - The 15th edition of âEmily Postâs Etiquetteâ is published.
1995 - âEmily Postâs Teen Etiquetteâ by Elizabeth Post and Joan Coles is published. Elizabeth Post officially retires as
spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute.
The Tradition Continuesâ¦
1991 - Peggy Grayson Post, great-granddaughter-in-law to Emily and daughter-in-law to Elizabeth, begins working with Elizabeth making appearances at bridal events.
1995 - Peggy Post is named spokesperson and author for the Emily Post Institute, succeeding Elizabeth. Peggy becomes a
contributing editor for Good Housekeeping magazine. Writing column âEtiquette for Today,â a Post tradition for more than 25 years. HarperCollins issues âEmily Postâs Complete Guide to Weddings with Elizabeth and Peggy Postâ on CD-ROM. Peggy continues making appearances at bridal events and begins conducting media interviews. Peggy begins writing the 16th edition of âEtiquette,â which when published in spring, 1997, will mark the 75th anniversary of Etiquette and its influence on American society.
1996 - A New York Times article asks: âEtiquette; Is It Back?âDuring the same month, Peggy is interviewed by NBC, CBS, CNN,
Lifetime Television, the Los Angeles Times, the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Daily Herald, the Atlanta Journal & Constitution and
Newsday.
1997 - The 75th Anniversary edition of âEtiquetteâ is published by HarperCollins; author Peggy Post completes a
14-city book tour, conducting interviews with print, radio and television reporters from across the country, including an appearance on âThe Oprah Winfrey Show.â She also begins writing a quarterly column on childrenâs manners for Parents magazine.
1998 - Peggy Post begins work on a new book on entertaining to be published in the fall.
2000 - Peggy is joined at the institute by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Peter Post and Cindy Post Senning.
A New Generation Takes the Reins...
2000 -
???? - Lizzie Post becomes the first 5th generation Post to join the institute when she agree to write book for young adults eventually titled, How Do You Work This Life Thing.
???? - Anna Post joins her sister as the second 5th generation Post to come aboard. Her work delivering Seminars and as a Brand Spokesperson quickly make her a sought after presenter on the topic of etiquette for all audiences.
2008 - Daniel Post Senning joins the institute to change copy paper and see if maybe his interest in blogs has application at the family business. He would go on to co-author the next editions of both Etiquette and The Etiquette Advantage in Business. His first solo title, Manners in a Digital World, was published in 2010.
2015 - A regular appearance by Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning on the radio show, Dinner Party Download by APM, spins off into the Q&A format podcast Awesome Etiquette. The show has continued weekly since the launch, never missing a week or repeating an episode or question.
2017 - The 19th edition of Etiquette is published with Lizzie and Daniel as primary authors.
