The Hundred Dresses: Day 58

Don’t worry, there aren’t 8728 Vogue 8728s. This one dates from October 2011:

I think this may be my most recent alphabet-print dress. I have lots and lots of alphabet-print FABRIC still, but I haven’t felt the need to make any of it up recently. Perhaps because I give fewer dictionary-themed talks these days?

The bodice (the type’s not quite so sharp on this one):

Today’s Vogue 8728 comes with a bonus helping of Supreme Court Justice:

The Hundred Dresses (the book) is now up to eight Amazon reviews … but it’s always nice to have more, if you’ve read the book and want to have your say!

The Hundred Dresses: Day 17

Careful readers of A Dress A Day (are there any other kind? I think not) will have seen this dress twice before; it’s definitely one of my favorites:

The buttons are probably my favorite part — they’re covered with another black&white alphabet fabric at a different scale:

There are a lot of things I’ll do differently when I make this pattern again. For instance, I don’t think the placket edges need to be edgestitched:

And when I first put in the zipper, I started the top too low and the fabric ripped at the stress point — you can see the repair below (I also replaced the zipper):

Here’s the back, it’s off-center on my dress form but not in real life, really.

Honestly, I don’t know why I don’t make this all the time, it’s super-comfortable and not very demanding. It might be because I tend to shy away from center-front skirt seams, but I’m getting over that. Maybe I’ll give this one another shot soon …

More Vogue 8728

The sharper-eyed among you may have noticed that I had a new dress on in that picture with Justice O'Connor. I did! It's this one:

I'm pretty obsessed with Vogue 8728 at this point. For one thing, it's incredibly comfortable to wear. The gathers in the bodice and cap sleeves allow for a lot of range of motion in the shoulders — I never feel as if reaching up to grab something is going to result in a big "rriiiiiiipppp". The skirt's easy to wear, too (especially as I have — as is my wont — added ginormous pockets).

Here's a closer view of the bodice:

I know one of you lovely readers gave me the heads-up on this fabric, probably two years ago now. (I bought it on eBay, cue Weird Al.) Was it you? Thank you! (Take credit in the comments!)

So yeah I've made a few more of these recently. It's my new go-to. Watch for them all this week …
