Montezuma's Treasure is a legendary Pan-American treasure that appears in the Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History.
History[]
Thousands of years ago, before the Europeans arrived, a bunch of independent tribes spanned the Americas. Some of them passed their history and culture down through textiles and art. Whenever war broke out, some of the women fled with their sacred objects so their history would be preserved. Over time, a treasure grew until the greatest threat arrived, the conquistadors. But one brave woman who risked her life to save the treasure from the conquistadors. She was a Nahua teenager named Malinche. She became enslaved and was forced to work for Hernán Cortés as a translator. Over the last two-hundred years, she had been viewed as a traitor who helping the Spanish slaughter indigenous peoples in their quest for gold. However, Malinche was secretly using her position in Cortés camp to keep one eye on the conquistadors while her underground alliance of women could smuggle the treasure away. These women called themselves the Daughters of the Plumed Serpent.
Once the treasure was hidden, the women created a treasure map and broke it into three pieces. These pieces were formed into three puzzle box cubes made from obsidian, jade, and blue lapis. Each one of these boxes were given to the Aztec, the Inca, and Maya, with the idea that once the conquistadors were vanquished, they would come together again and rejoin the pieces of the map and find the treasure.
The three boxes were lost over time, and the existence of the treasure became nothing more than a legend. Every scholar agreed Inca and Mesoamerican civilizations had never communicated, let alone worked together to hide a great treasure. And that Malinche was no hero. However, centuries later, Jess's parents believed the legends of the treasure were real, and they were determined to prove it to the world. Rafael defended his wife, Manuela, when professors brought her down with her dissertation being nothing more than a fantasy.
