How to Eat and Drink Your Way Through Eastern Market

Lions tailgating, a fall beer festival, a district filled with optimal food and drink options

View as Map

Eastern Market is Detroit’s quintessential food hub, where each weekend, tens of thousands of metro Detroiters make their way to its iconic sheds for all manner of produce, prepared foods, meat processors, garden starters. During the fall season, the district is home to Lions tailgating, a plethora of seasonal, Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables, and special programming and events, including the Michigan Brewers Guild’s Detroit Fall Beer Festival. Visitors of the ticketed event can purchase food from the locally-based eateries that will be set up to sell their cuisine and try sips from the more than 100 breweries on hand that will present more than 530 beers in 87 different styles.

In recent months, the area has welcomed a number of newer establishments, including the casual walk-up diner and cafe Mitsos Greek Food & Coffee, while market stalwart Supino Pizzeria has reemerged from a fire and is again slinging takeout slices and pies to hungry shoppers. Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled for Baobab Fare’s bright yellow food truck business, Waka, which in the coming months, will have a physical space within the property formerly occupied by the stalwart Russell Street Deli. With the chill of winter on the horizon, now’s the time to revisit the food and drink spots that define Eastern Market.
