There’s really never been a better time to be a coffee drinker in Detroit than now. The city is flooded with an abundance of great third wave cafes roasting their own beans and community shops offering comfortable atmospheres with excellent local roasts. A decade ago, Detroiters considered themselves lucky if a national chain option came to town. Today, we have options, from cafes that specialize in highlighting the work of Black and brown coffee farmers, places where one can pick up a bag groceries on the way out, and third spaces that also offer culturally relevant cuisine. With an ever increasing array of spots to fuel up on caffeine — be it a latte or a cup of tea — it’s sometimes hard choose the best spots. Below find a guide to some of Detroit's finest cafes to get cozy below Eight Mile.

This Rosedale community coffee pays homage to owner Charity Dean’s great-grandmother, Rosa Malone, among the first Black individuals to move to the area in the 1970s. The pastel pink and green decor is complemented with coffee beans sourced from Fast Haus Coffee Roasting Co. and a small variety of pastries and sandwiches. The Congregation is an any-occasion type of spot where you can get a charcuterie board and a bottle of Beaujolais with friends or a veggie sandwich and a cold brew while reading a book. The lower basement area also has space enough to host private parties. Cafe Prince

This Core City cafe boasts a health-conscious menu for the folks who need a little sustenance, but not the typical pastry-centric fare one might come to expect in a coffee shop. In addition to its selection of espresso drinks, visitors can try one of the spot’s refreshing house-made beverages like the Sunrise with orange juice and espresso. Cafe Prince also produces its own oak milk, on top of offering regular and coconut milk options. To eat, grab a whole carrot, described simply as “nude, raw, chilled,” the Holy Trinity, which includes sliced apples, razor thin shavings of parmigiano reggiano, and raw honey, or on Wednesdays, the cafe serves Neapolitan-style pizza.

Situated in the space where the shuttered flagship Astro location once stood, visitors will find a familiar aesthetic as the previous tenant, as well as those Corktown neighborhood feels. The brief menu currently features espresso drinks, pour-overs, and tea. Coffee is sourced from Anthology Coffee in Eastern Market and Grand Coffee Roasters, based in San Francisco. JP Makes and Bakes

This long-anticipated bakery and cafe provides folks in the New Center area a welcoming space for coffee and baked goods inspired by owner/pastry chef Jonathan Peregrino’s Filipino American upbringing. Expect cookies and brownies infused with ube, a variety of pandesal — Filipino bread rolls — available with fillings like coconut or cream cheese topped with everything bagel seasoning, and a selection of savory entrees, such as longaniza biscuits and gravy, and adobo rice bowls. To drink, customers can find espresso drinks and coffee sourced from Craig’s Coffee in Midtown, as well as specialty beverages like coconut ube matchas and a refreshing drink using calamansi — a citrus fruit typical of the Philippines. The space features an open concept and seating for about 10 people.

Situated on the ground level of the recently constructed Perennial Corktown apartment building, this market and cafe is the latest venture from the founders of Kitab Cafe and Bookstore, which got its start in Hamtramck. In addition to carrying a full-service grocery store stocked with pantry staples, produce, and dairy products, the space features a cafe with ample seating. Coffee and espresso beverages are made with Colombe Coffee and visitors can also order pastries and other baked goods sourced from Zingerman’s Bakehouse.

Sepia Coffee Project has taken over the space that once housed the Gathering Coffee Co., marking the first brick and mortar space for the burgeoning Black-owned roaster. Sepia partners directly with Black and brown farmers throughout parts of the Americas, Africa, and the Indian Pacific and has named its collections of roasted beans after the areas of Detroit that once served as hubs for Black life. Expect single-origin offerings from the Paradise and Blk Bottom collections, or Sepia’s specialty-grade offering, Harmonie. Select an espresso beverage from the hand-painted menu on the wall, pick a pastry from a countertop display case, or grab a bag of beans and other coffee-related merch to brew some of your own at home.

Traditional Yemeni coffee is continuing to expand its presence in metro Detroit with the opening of a Midtown location of Haraz Coffee House, the Dearborn-based chain that features a variety speciality espresso drinks like the saffron latte, teas like the Adeni chai, and pastries like the milk cake made with saffron and rose milk. Several locations are already dotted throughout the region and outside of Michigan.
