Detroit’s Only Big Boy Bids Farewell to Islandview

Detroit’s only Big Boy restaurant will close its doors next month after 50 years of business. The restaurant located on East Jefferson has been will be razed to make way for new projects from development group The Platform.

The Big Boy location is expected to close following Easter Sunday. The owner of Big Boy is giving employees bonuses and offering them assistance with relocation and job placement at other restaurants, according to a release.

It’s still not clear yet exactly what will become of the one-acre Islandview property. Representatives for The Platform say the company is working with surrounding residents to determine what they would most like to see in their neighborhood. The space may welcome a farmers market and/or a food truck park.

Across the street, The Platform has also entered into an agreement to acquire five parcels from the Detroit Land Bank Authority on East Grand Boulevard between East Jefferson Avenue and Congress Street. For more details on The Platform, visit Eater’s sister site Curbed Detroit.
