While the Mile High City’s food and beverage industry appears to be booming, longtime locals may notice that many time-honored establishments are disappearing, like Gus Mavrocefalos’ Famous Pizza, which shutters today, August 27.

The corner eatery at 98 South Broadway, known for its sizeable New York-style slices and hearty calzones, has been open and operating since 1974. Portland-based Voodoo Doughnut’s second Denver location will replace Famous Pizza sometime in 2019.

“We were kicked out,” a Famous Pizza employee said Monday over the phone, explaining that the business couldn’t afford rising rent costs. The employee added that Famous Pizza would remain open throughout the day until all ingredients are used up.

Last spring, Bayaud Investors LLC purchased the White Palace building in which Famous Pizza lived for more than four decades. The business was prepared to close by the end of 2017 but continued renting this year month to month. Next door in the same building, Socorro’s turned out the lights this July.
